Neil McGuigan most notable brands would be McGuigan, Nepenthe and Passion Pop. However, Passion Pop is sold as a “carbonated grape based beverage”

My problem with his statement is what about the winemakers who have only made wine this way? Have they never made “real” wine? What about Nicolas Joly, Jean Foillard and Stanko Radikon, these wines are free of additives so therefore should we not classify them as wine?

Now I don’t love the term “natural” or “minimal intervention” because winemaking sees intervention constantly starting from the very beginning, in the vineyard. Viticulturists are manipulating the growth of the vine to produce grapes of a certain quality. In the winery, the winemaker needs to intervene & steer the grapes into their future, our favourite beverage, wine! Call it whatever makes you happy, it’s just fermented grape juice after all

Liberty in winemaking plays an important role nowadays and I believe that anybody serious about this beverage should embrace it and/or at least respect it. I'll stick to the latter on Good Intentions. It takes profound skill to make a good Riesling, let alone a great one and when you're putting it through skin contact, you're not doing yourself any favors. First of all, picking time is crucial for phenolics (earlier harvest = unripe phenolics). Secondly, if you ferment the wine to dryness, they'll stick out and you'll be drinking sandpaper. Not what you want from a delicate variety. So what do you need?

Sugar. You need sugar to counter two things - acidity and dryness. There was none of that here. Aromas of cheap orange essence (the one they use in gas pump toilets), fennel seed, dried apricot, oolong and roasted walnuts. The tartness stands out as the main actor, followed by a huge dose of salinity. No real substance comes in to back up these queer flavors and even a cheese pairing didn't help. An unspeakably astringent aftertaste led me to guess that even a few seeds crept in there. If the intention was to be cool and funky then yeah, it was well-executed (loving the label). But I'm thinking much more was in plan at a price of 33 AUD.

Trendy but excellent orange wine. This 2010 Radikon Ribolla Gialla from Venezia Giulia might be the finest extended-skin-contact white wine that I have ever had. The nose tended towards sweet tangerine, perhaps a touch of lemon — but generally warmer lemon. Much less of the floral notes that traditionally dominate most of its orange compatriots, but a touch of that indistinct bouquet of assorted light and dark flowers. The acidity on this wine was outrageously high. Salivation would not stop — ultra-premium Riesling levels. Alcohol was well-balanced, at a happy medium (12.5%). The body sat at a light, zippy medium(-), owing to both the acidity and surprisingly low phenolics. There was not one off-flavor on the palate; warm, clean citrus ran the show. This wine was astonishingly good, and I hesitate calling this an orange/amber — I feel its quality makes “innovative white wine” a much fairer descriptor. I would love to see how this wine changes over the next ten years, but it is drinking fabulously now

En fin indgang til landets orangevine fra de traditionelle nedgravede lerkrukker kan være Mtsvane fra Vaziani i Kakheti. Fint duftende af røg, røgelse og æbletobak, karakteristisk tør med et væld af fine tanniner og en frisk smag af æbler og citrus. Korsholm Vin
Current Orange Crush: Cos Pithos Bianco 2017 Sicily. A product of traditional style wine making, Cos is made with 100% organic Grecanico aged on its skins in amphora for 6 months. Wild yeasts are also an essential part of the fermentation process. This is another great example of a wine that show cases it’s terrior: I can almost taste the hot Mediterranean sun and clay soils, the olives and wild thyme. Decant recommended. A beautiful addition to any collection.
