The bride posing alongside the sandy Mediterranean could have been on any glorious beach….until you panned out on the shanty town its waves landed. I viewed this scene from inside the home of Palestinian refugee in Jal el Baher, her house squeezed between the Mediterranean Sea and the main highway through the city of Tyre, in south Lebanon. It is home to 250 families, many have lived here for over 60 years in deep poverty. They live in fragile homes protected from the elements with corrugated metal roofing sheets. Each day the sea brings debris up the beach and in bad weather the water enters their homes. Working on a upcoming project on the Nakba with #amnestyinternational, (release date May 15th), we were not there for a celebration. But something about the stunning bride made the women we were interviewing uncomfortable. She was not from the Palestinians living there…the bride’s family had newly arrived as refugees from Syria. This was the only place they could afford, this edge of nowhere with zero services from the UN. But that was not what was bothering her. It turns out she was a teen bride… “a child bride”, she whispered. I went to say hello to said child bride, who by now was back in her home. She welcomed me, showing off her dress in a series of poses as her mother doted on her and her little sister appeared heart broken to be losing her.
