I used to work at the Ghirardelli attached to this luxury hotel. Just in front of this entrance there is an open room where the elevators and beautiful, blue-carpeted-stairwell are. If you go down two flights of stairs, they turn into industrial metal stairs that lead to a door; and on the other side of that door, were more industrial stairs, and on those stairs is where we would take our lunch breaks. We didn’t have a break room and weren’t allowed to take our breaks in the restaurant, lest it “ruin the experience of the guests”. So on those metal stairs, I would take my breaks and lean against the wall and stare at my fudge-and-ice-cream-stained restaurant shoes, and on Friday nights I would occasionally encounter a hotel couple who had found this sad scene by drunken accident. They would always laugh, try to hide the laugh, get out an unapologetic “sorry!” And close the door giggling. To them, their drunken mistake led them to a ‘unique’ adventurous mishap they would exaggerate about to friends; to me, it was the smallest I could ever feel.
