Clifden Castle is a ruined manor house that was once the stately home of John D’Arcy. D’Arcy founded the nearby town of Clifden and built the castle for his family in the early 1800s. The wealthy landowner had the castle designed in a Gothic Revival style, complete with mock turrets. The land surrounding the castle was leased to poor tenants, and the rents helped to pay for the D’Arcy family to live in Clifden Castle for two generations. ------------------------------------------------------

Lismore Castle was built as the sister castle to Ardfinnan in 1185 by Prince John to guard the river crossing, the castle site was originally occupied by Lismore Abbey, an important monastery and seat of learning established in the early 7th century. It was still an ecclesiastical centre when King Henry II of England stayed here in 1171, and except for a brief period after 1185 when his son King John of England built a 'castellum' here, it served as the episcopal residence of the local bishop. It was a possession of the Earls of Desmond, whose lands were broken up during the plantations following the killing of The 15th Earl of Desmond in 1583. In 1589, Lismore was leased and later acquired by Sir Walter Raleigh.

“The silver-stone tower calls the ships home,
But it’s no beacon of light to her.
In the dark mist where clouds meet waves,
She sits alone by the shore, longing for the sea.”
An excerpt from a poem I wrote many moons ago, which this photo reminded me of. Part of my #mythphotos Selkie series shot at the Giant’s Causeway by @jamessterlingphoto.

Themed post 5/7 #standingstones .
I've been neglecting standing stones recently because they don't have the same wow factor as a castle or mansion but they are still an important part of our heritage. Here is a very small selection of West Cork's lesser known Bronze Age stones, I can't show them all as there are literally thousands of them around here.
