The temple of Poseidon is a peripteral temple of the Doric order located in today's Piazza Castello in the historic center of Taranto. It appears to be the oldest temple in Magna Graecia and is the only place of Greek worship that can still be visited in the Ancient Village. The temple is dated to the first quarter of the 6th century BC. It is assumed that the Doric peristasis is due to a phase of expansion following the construction of the cell as no constructive connections are found in the foundations with the oldest nucleus.⠀ The ruins of the temple were incorporated into the church of the SS. Towards the end of the nineteenth century the archaeologist Luigi Viola studied the remains and attributed the temple to the cult of Poseidon, but it it is more likely to be related to the female divinities of Artemis, Persephone or Hera.⠀ •⠀ Il tempio di Poseidone è un tempio periptero di ordine dorico situato nella odierna piazza Castello nel centro storico di Taranto. Risulta essere il tempio più antico della Magna Grecia ed è l'unico luogo di culto greco ancora visitabile nel Borgo Antico. Il tempio è datato al primo quarto del VI secolo a.C.. Last stop in the Middle East: Petra, the ancient, 2,000 year old city of the Nabataean Arabs, who built a trading empire by making their city a key intersection for trade that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. First glimpsed through the pink and terracotta-colored soaring cliffs of the narrow gorge which is the entrance to the city, the Al-Khazneh (the Treasury) appears and is an immense facade miraculously carved in the early 1st century into the sheer rock face. One of the most incredible places I’ve visited...Petra, Jordan. Dating to around 300 B.C., it contains many tombs and temples carved into the pink sandstone cliffs. To have been able to see this ancient city by day, and by night, when the Treasury was lit with thousands of candles, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will treasure always. When you visit such an exquisite historical treasure, so well preserved, you realize just how small we are in the giant face of history, but how very large our impact can be, good and bad.
