MY FAVOURITE BOOKS OF 2018 SO FAR — #AliasGrace by #MargaretAtwood — historical fiction based on a real story, mysterious, dark, ambiguous and completely enthralling from start to end. #BadFeminist by #RoxaneGay — interesting and very insightful essays on feminism and feminist readings of popular culture. #TheGloaming by #KirstyLogan — set on a magical island that slowly turns its inhabitants to stone, featuring lesbian mermaid protagonists, what more could you want? #IAmIAmIAm by #MaggieOFarrell — a memoir about the author’s seventeen brushes with death, very moving and absolutely beautifully written. #MyYearofRestandRelaxation by #OttessaMoshfegh (will be released July 10) — disturbing, addicting and ultimately, absolutely brilliant. #TheSilentCompanions by #LauraPurcell — classic Gothic fiction at its best, prepare to be thoroughly creeped out! #SingUnburiedSing by #JesmynWard — a thoroughly modern take on the Southern Gothic, dark and sometimes downright brutal story with a rough kind of beauty to it. #StayWithMe by #AyobamiAdebayo — story of a marriage in 1980s Nigeria and beyond, (at this point I feel like I‘m repeating myself) moving, tender and very intense. #TroubledDaughtersTwistedWives edited by #SarahWeinman — an anthology featuring many great stories from female writers in the domestic suspense and noir genre. #Wasmanvonhieraussehenkann by #MarianaLeky (German book by German author) — melancholisch-schön und irgendwie surreal, sehr unaufgeregt erzählt, aber letztendlich unheimlich kraftvoll. Honourable mentions: #SharpObjects by #GillianFlynn — dark, creepy and twisted as f*ck (I feel like swearing is justified in this case - seriously, this book!!) #MagpieMurders by #AnthonyHorowitz — unique mystery in the vein of the classics of the genre (think Agatha Christie), fun and surprising. — The year is almost halfway over by now (time flies!), so I thought I’d share my favourite books of the first half of the year with you. #LotteRecommends: Novels feat. authors as protagonists ‍ — #TheMonstersWeDeserve by #MarcusSedgwick — An author (who I’m about 95% sure is Marcus Sedgwick himself) retreats to a secluded house in the mountains to write and reflect. Haunted by a book he dislikes, Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein, and the growing suspicion that the house is not what it seems, this results in a (sort of) ghost story mixed with metafictional ponderings on authorship vs. authority. I think it‘s best to know as little as possible before reading it, but if this sounds interesting to you definitely give it a go! I thought it was brilliant. 4.5/5 ⭐️ — #TheWordIsMurder by #AnthonyHorowitz — Well-known author and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz teams up with a private detective to solve the murder of a woman who arranged her own funeral just hours before being strangled to death. It‘s definitely the easiest and probably the most entertaining read out of the three, as it doesn’t get extremely metafictional. It’s just a good crime novel with quite a lot of name dropping and some insight into the movie and publishing industry. 3.75/5 ⭐️ — #NacheinerwahrenGeschichte (English title: #BasedOnATrueStory) by #DelphinedeVigan — French author Delphine meets the mysterious L., a ghostwriter, at a party. They get along really well and L. slowly but surely infiltrates Delphine’s life. Again, I think it’s best to know as little as possible before reading it. It’s an incredibly interesting slow-burning thriller and a bit of a mindfuck, as you never really know what’s real and what isn’t. Highly recommended! 4.5/5 ⭐️ — Do you have any recommendations for books that play with metafiction on some level? ✨ Are you interested in similar recommendations post with more specific topics like this one? I enjoy doing them, but they‘re also a bit more time consuming! [I just realized that I posted the last #LotteRecommends-post exactly one year ago. Coincidence? I think not. ]

Im currently making my way through the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz and brought books 4 and 5 to Tenerife with me! They're oldies now (book 1 was released in 2000!), but still so good! They're about a teenage spy and they're so fast paced and action packed, I love them! Have any of you guys read this series?
