Hawaii really be looking like a snack While calls for American imperialism started in the 1870s, annexation of territory did not occur until the presidency of William McKinley. Many different reasons were give to justify Imperialism. Territories like the Kingdom of Hawaii were desired for economic gain (sugar plantations were profitable in Hawaii). Attempts to annex Hawaii at first failed since President Grover Cleveland was an anti-imperialist and vetoed actions, but annexation occurred under McKinley. Other territories like Cuba had been desired since the Ostend Manifesto (1854). Along with Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, Cuba was fought for during the Spanish-American War (being that all territories were Spanish). The war started after the explosion of the USS Maine and lasted from April-August of 1898. US victory occurred due to a strong naval power (known as the Great White Fleet) and was official with the signing of the Treaty of Paris (not to be confused with a treaty of the same name that ended the Revolutionary War). From it’s victory, the US gained control of the territories (most only in an economic sense). The lasting effects led the US to become both an economic and military power. Since territories believed that they would achieve freedom after the war, territories rebelled American occupation. Even though imperialism was supported by many Americans, it was also objected by Americans (mainly Democrats) who believed either that the US should not become a colonial power like that of Great Britain or that the American identity was exclusive to a homogenous white race. Black Muslim athletes have protested U.S. imperialism, militarism, and systemic anti-Blackness in the U.S. for decades. Many of them, along with other Black athletes, have jeopardized and even lost their careers for standing up for justice, their morals, and their people.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Muhammad Ali’s arrest for refusing to be drafted to the Vietnam War was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements. In his 1967 statement, Ali centered his religious beliefs when discussing his opposition to the war and refusal to advance U.S. empire:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ “War is against the teachings of the Qur’an. […] Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?“⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who was slowly exiled from the NBA in 1996 for choosing not to stand during the National Anthem, characterized his dissent as an act guided by what he called his “Muslim conscience.” From Abdul-Rauf’s perspective, his faith would never allow him to honor a flag that stood for injustice. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ In 2016, Abdul-Rauf reiterated that he couldn’t stand for a flag that “represented tyranny and oppression. Not just from a domestic perspective but from a global one.
