Single mama 33% of Australian single mothers live below the poverty line. So many more are on the cusp; not necessarily on a total income basis, but certainly with what they’re left with after living expenses, legal expense, childcare, medical expenses etc etc. For the first three years of E’s life I budgeted down to the teeth and was still often forced to borrow cash from my mum to get me through to pay day. I had a great job, Two in fact. I secured 4 promotions and scored a few distinctions for law school during this time. My rent was paid, child care fees up to date, E was always overfed & beautifully dressed (I’m still a whizz on the sale racks). But I received no child support and my immense legal fees and the general cost of singularly raising a child whilst supporting myself eventually forced me into bankruptcy at the tender age of 24. Some days I did not have 75c for Aldi bread. Literally, I used to check under the mats in my car for change before trudging off to my mum’s to ask for $20 until pay day. My mum of course understood, she’d single handedly raised four of us alone. You’d never have known, I never let it show, neither did she. Aside from in small parts as I withdrew from friends and colleagues. Always offering an excuse for not attending social events that I couldn’t afford. Buying everything I needed personally second hand or bottom $ so that E could have the pretty, quality things I desperately wanted to give her. It was a hard time. That’s why when @melbcitymission got in touch and asked if I might jump on board as one of this years ‘Anti Poverty Week Change Makers’, I readily agreed. Anti-Poverty week is Australia’s expansion of the UN’s annual International Anti-Poverty Day, aiming to lower the poverty line and help those in need. This year it will take place between 14-20 October and will be co-chaired by Melbourne City Mission and the Council of Single Mothers and their Children, on behalf of the 33% of Australian single mothers and their babes who are currently living in poverty and need our support.
