When @hinterlandbees got called in to remove a swarm from this rather elaborate tree house, it turned out to be a hive. Despite the amount of comb, it was pristine white indicating that it had only been there a few days, and the queen was laying well. It was a little unusual because the colony had set up between the shutters and the insect screen, fully exposed to the inside of the room. We were able to cut out the comb and re-home these bees into one of our nucleus boxes in no time at all. After weeks of rain at @hinterlandbees, the sun has finally come out over the last couple of days. Constant rainy days has two main negative impacts on our hives: 1. the bees need to eat into their honey stores and the consequence of them running out is starvation. 2. rain washes away the nectar and pollen from flowers, and therefore when the sun does come out, it takes a few days of dry weather for the bees' food sources to return. These are two good reasons to make sure we never take too much honey from our hives. The other consequence of prolonged confinement is a population increase. The natural attrition of a colony is about 500 bees dying each day. Because the bees are not out flying, wearing themselves out and putting themselves in danger the attrition rate decreases tremendously and therefore the population of the colony can rapidly increase putting extra strain on dwindling stored resources. When the sun comes out, there is a rush for bees to resume their work. There is also a whole new army of bees ready to take flight for the first time, that is when we see mass orientation flights happening around the hive entries, dozens of bees seeming to be just hovering around for a few minutes before all returning to the hive. These are the new bees just getting their bearings, and they tend to do these orientation flights in groups, typically in the early afternoon. Here's a closer look at our @hinterlandbees honey and wax press. We don't use this device that often but it's excellent for extracting honey from burr comb; that's the naturally formed comb, usually built up under the hive lid when the bees run out of space. These presses work best when the honeycomb is nice and warm, which it is when it comes straight from the hive. The colony maintains their brood nest at 34°C / 93°F and consequently, the burr comb is not far off that temperature, particularly if harvested on a warm day. We originally acquired our press to remove honey from our cappings but found that it wasn't worth the effort and we were better off just being patient and letting the honey drain out of the cappings. These presses are used for a multitude of purposes and are often sold as cider or grape presses. If you are looking to purchase one, you might just as easily find them at a winemaking or brewer's supply shop as a beekeeping supplier. Check out the fanning behaviour of this swarm caught by @hinterlandbees No, they are not stinging, they are releasing a powerful pheromone called Nasonov from a gland right at the tip of their abdomen, just above their stinger. Look at the close-up at the end of this video, you can see a white area just above the black tip of her abdomen. Nasonov is released for a variety of reasons, but its primary effect is to orientate the rest of the colony. It's most commonly encountered by beekeepers when catching swarms as the worker bees use it to form the swarm cluster. This is the final stage of the @hinterlandbees really-hard-to-access Tewantin beehive removal (see the previous 2 posts). This is how I save the brood comb and use it, and the queen, to attract all of the bees into their new home. SEE THE FULL VIDEO VIA THE LINK IN BIO ↖ With the brood comb containing 1000’s of unborn bees it is important to try to save as much as possible. I use rubber bands to hold the comb into place and after a couple of days the bees will attach the comb into the frames with wax and chew off the rubber bands. The queen and very young uncapped larvae in the brood comb emit a strong pheromone that binds the colony together.
