This fluted armor from the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 3126) is now to be seen in the #deutschesburgenmuseum Veste Heldburg. The armor comes from the armory of the castle Wernstein near Kulmbach in Franconia and has belonged to a member of the noble family of Kühnsberg. The noble family still lives on the Castle, which has been repeatedly extended over the generations. This Maximilian Armor dates around 1520 and with that kind of shoulders it’s made in the style of a light cavalry armor of that time. The lance rest is missing, but the holes for attaching it are there. It is good to be seen how each fluted ridge is highlighted by two engraved lines. It will have been made in Southern Germany, may be in Nuremberg, but I haven’t seen any marks. It could be that there is a mark on the backplate, which I haven’t seen, but if there also is no mark it may have been made by armorers, that haven’t been member of an armorers guild, but that’s not for sure. It is a fine example for the elegance of the Maximilian Style and also an early example for the trend towards lighter armor, which in addition to the heavier armor found distribution. Depending on the occasion, it could have been worn together with other parts of armor and for example with a close helmet, an early form of a burgonet or just a skull cap under a big hat. Augsburg, 1594-1599. ~*~ Rüstkammer, Dresden, Germany. ~*~ The ceremonial set for the rider and the horse with the saddle was bought in Augsburg by Elector Christian Saxon in 1602. Embossed decoration in the form of fruit bouquets, flowers, birds and insects, as well as trophies completely cover gray iron armor. Additionally riveted figured images of gilded copper. The scenes show the rider in antique armor in battle, lions, animal masks and fabulous creatures that are framed in a frame of roller-leaves and leaves. A mixture of gray iron and gold-plated elements demonstrates a decorative excess of symmetrical shapes and represents the highest point of the art of embossing. Flashback to a different set of amour, a year and a half ago it was more XIV inspired, though it’s the same breastplate as my current armor as I’m waiting on a new one.

Please zoom in for more details. This armor for a boy in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 1345) has been made in Augsburg in 1563. It is decorated with etchings made by a master with the initials HS, that may be Hans Strohmeyer. The armor has also been blackened and gilded. By the middle of the 16th century, the influence of Spanish court fashion was gaining ground, which led to the development of the elongated peascod breastplate. With the children's armor the young people were accustomed to a chivalrous life and representative purposes were also fulfilled. Some armor for adolescents have been preserved, which are basically the same design as the adult armor. The fact that these armors could only be worn for a short time before their wearers had outgrown them did not prevent anyone from making these armors as elaborate as those for adults.
