A longtime dream for our Children's Wonder Garden has become a reality thanks to the incredible talent and generosity of UNC student and volunteer Leah Purvis. Leah has painted a series of meticulously detailed, larger-than-life native butterflies to accompany the Children's Wonder Garden pollinator plants. A monarch, spicebush swallowtail, pearl crescent, eastern tiger swallowtail, and silver-spotted skipper — all to scale — now float near their host plants in the garden. Interpretive signage is on its way, but we didn't want to wait any longer: come check out these amazing works of art (and science)!

The story of chaos theory usually centers around Edward Lorenz, the meteorologist who started a scientific revolution on a desk-size computer in the 1960s. But there is another half of the narrative that has remained untold until now: It was the simulations by the coders Ellen Fetter and Margaret Hamilton that uncovered strange attractors and other phenomena at the heart of Lorenz’s chaos theory. The minimization of women coders’ role in building chaos theory is emblematic of science historians’ tendency to lionize solitary geniuses. В Главном штабе Эрмитажа @hermitage_museum идёт выставка «Искусственный интеллект и диалог культур», посвященная (как заявлено организаторами) художественным возможностям искусственного интеллекта. . Как заходишь, сразу попадаешь в пульсирующее пространство архитектурных фантазий, сгенерированных на основе огромного массива созданных человечеством зданий (видео в начале). Надо признаться, очень впечатляет. . Впрочем, я о другом. Как наша жизнь изменилась за предыдущие 15 лет? Согласитесь, кардинально. А как изменится за последующие 15? Трудно даже представить. Мы всё больше погружаемся в «кажимое» пространство, в виртуальный мир сетевых алгоритмов, big data, blockchain, «личных кабинетов», «ников», аватаров, электронных денег и электронных друзей. . Хотим мы того или нет, но эта цифровая реальность - наше будущее. И вот тут вся «трагедия» в том, что само будущее (как категория времени) стало другим. Как бы объяснить... Раньше люди воспринимали будущее (глобально), как то, что будет происходить, но... как бы не с ними. И в общем то, оно (будущее) отвечало этим людским притязаниям - историческое время текло медленно и скорость изменения «жизненного уклада» была явно ниже времени жизни одного поколения. . Но сегодня всё изменилось! Время бежит со скоростью света, а «будущее» наступает не когда-нибудь, а в буквально обозримой (и проживаемой) конкретным человеком перспективе. . А это значит (кроме всего прочего), что от «искусственного искусства» нельзя просто отмахнуться. Потому что - это то, что с неизбежностью ждёт всех нас. С неизбежностью. Всех. Нас. . Искусство - один из последних бастионов «человеческого, слишком человеческого». «Сдача» этого бастиона может привести к новому витку эволюции Разума, а может и к его гибели... .
