Tomorrow, I journey forth on the last leg of my international travels, having stepped foot in seven countries already. The lead up to this trip was filled with an eagerness to learn about the cultures I would soon experience in person. I researched places to eat, museums to visit, neighborhoods to stay in. I thought I had it all planned out. It'd be easy: fly, see art, meet a few people, repeat in the next city. Instead, I've been kicked in the face and made dumbfounded like a Shiraga painting wrapped around my head. — The preparation was like getting the paints ready for application. Mixing and stirring and thinking about how a blank canvas could be colored. Then with each person I've spoken to in Asia, each new interaction, I've better understood my own heritage and the fabric of who I am as an individual. What I've long ignored has led me to see a world far larger than the New York-centric one I've been so accustomed to. While Shiraga painted in a fast manner, the strokes with his feet are long, stretching across the canvas like the mental connections I've made on this trip - brief romances with each city but ultimately stitched together as a single, larger discovery of this world and my place in it. — #KazuoShiraga #FergusMcCaffrey #ArtBaselHongKong #ArtBasel #ArtFair #ArtDrunkInHK

As I was filming in H Queens, a man said "get a life," laughing as he passed me down the stairwell. Expletives popped into my mind and it's taken me several days to get over the anger, the shock, and the offense of those words. It was one of my first times filming more seriously and an untimely hit to my confidence. — After thinking about it though, I wish I had said to him "I'm living my life exactly as I've ever wanted to." Being back in Asia after 6 years has been marvelously fulfilling - both experiencing the cultures I relate to the most and having a much more developed relationship with art this time around. This is the life I envisioned before I quit my job and it's the life that is materializing. — So much to post from Art Basel HK, but here are more of my highlights - the works that made me happy and those that quashed the pain for that man's words. Multimedia artist #SamDurant’s works address a variety of social issues. Often referencing American history, his work explores the varying relationships between culture and politics, engaging subjects from the civil rights movement to southern rock music. Over the last 20 years, Durant has mined the image archives of international protests and demonstrations as sources for drawings and large-scale lightbox signs.
