Going strictly off of the lighting alone, I think this drawing was one of the most fun to work on, it was also the first times I actively made an attempt to use a paint pen for highlights and since then, it’s been a integral part of my drawing process. If you also look at the drawings I had completed before this one, you’ll notice how texture became a focal point of my work from this drawing onward. One of the hardest things about working from an old reference is that it’s usually not very detailed and if you want to make a hyperrealistic drawing, you have to imagine a lot of the details yourself, I assume there are many ways you could do this but one of the ways I went about it was to find multiple references of Muhammad Ali, each of which had different lighting and try to understand how the texture of his skin appeared in each and then try my best to implement that with the reference I was working from.
