I love when friends send me photos of clouds and sky to use as inspiration for my paintings. They are always amazing jumping off points. I imagine stepping into that photo and feeling what it would be like to be in that environment. Trying to imagine the light and color, the affect it has on my mood and thoughts. Then I paint those reactions. I paint intuitively from that point on - meaning I let each brush stroke inform the next. Instead of being dictated by the reference photo, I let go and allow the painting to unfold itself. It’s a hard thing to explain. I guess you could say I paint more from my heart than from my head. The final painting ends up as an abstraction, not a literal reproduction of the scene from the photo. My hope is that my artwork expresses more meaning and feeling by allowing the painting to be discovered in this way. Sometimes the best designs come from exploration... by just letting the artist do their thing. . While I always have a design book available at events to choose from, I really enjoy when people say they want a freehand design. All my designs are technically freehand as I don't use stencils but they give me a price range and let me flow. . [ >> And with freehand designs I have a bad habit of giving you a larger design than what you paid for so really you're getting a better deal ] . Sometimes when I'm asked to incorporate a lot of different design elements into one piece it can feel too restricting. Because I want to make my clients happy but I also want to feel good about the design I give them. . And the thing is, henna is temporary ❤ So that means we can always incorporate the design elements we didn't use into your next one! . . Long story short, sometimes it's best to trust the artist & let them do their thing ✌
