The problem is that your pitcher, while running full speed at the plate, with half their attention on us and the other half on the runner, won’t be able to make that split-second adjustment if they aren’t already holding their glove where the tag should take place. This often leads to compounded mistakes and the ball getting by the pitcher. ・・・ With other runners on the base paths, being accurate with this toss back to the plate is incredibly important. ・・・ Gomes tossed the ball exactly to where his pitcher was holding the glove and not to the left side of the plate where the play was...and that is exactly what he should have done. ・・・ No, they didn’t get the out, and there are a few things that could have been cleaned up to prevent this from happening, but the consequences of the mistakes on this play were limited to just this one run because he made sure his pitcher could catch the toss. ・・・ Catchers, throw to the glove in this situation. Always! If the pitcher is holding it behind their back for some reason, throw it through their stomach to hit the glove. You don’t have to have a attached to your shoulder to throw runners out! Be in control of your body, be quick and be accurate! ・・・ With an average release velocity this year of 75.1 MPH (according to MLB Statcast) @tflowers25 doesn’t have the strongest arm in the league. Nobody’s questioning that. However, pay attention to how under control he stays through this release. ・・・ Flowers got rid of the ball in 0.66 seconds and got the ball to 2B in 1.99 seconds. If this ball is a couple inches higher, the runner is safe. But this throw was deadly accurate, and that’s a testament to Flowers’ ability to limit his lateral movements, stay under control and still get the ball in the air quickly. ・・・ Throwing isn’t where Flowers adds most of his value (he’s been the 3rd most valuable receiving catcher in MLB in 2019, and has ranked in the top 6 each of the last 3 seasons), but he has actually been better than Gary Sanchez (24% vs. 20%) at throwing out runners this year and I assure you that accurate throws like this have a lot to do with it. ・・・ Want to become the best catcher you can be? Helmet on? ✅, Two hands? ✅, Keeping head/neck up and side of body protected through tag? ✅. ・・・ @tonywolters with the exceptional job of not just making a great tag on a bang-bang play, but also kept himself safe! ・・・ #Catchers, keep the mask on, use two hands when possible, and do NOT dive head first into the runner. Tony did an incredible job making sure that first impact with his body wasn’t his head, neck or side, but his hands and arms while keeping his upper body upright through initial contact. ・・・ Yes, the mask got knocked off, but his head did not take the blow here. #Catchers, when establishing an angle of attack to the ball, make sure you realize how much time you actually have. ・・・ If we’re too early to the ball, we risk pushing the ball down out of the strike zone as we are forced to work back down to the ball. Or, we risk having to slow our glove movement as our arm races upwards. This leaves us with little support of the mitt and the ball can pull it out of the zone. ・・・ The goal should be to receive the pitch on the way up, working underneath the ball in a smooth constant motion. If it’s a strike, stick the pitch upon contact.
