I finished The Warden on the weekend. I’m a Trollope fan from way back, but this is my first time visiting Barchester. I found The book difficult to read and also a little unsatisfying at the end. It was difficult, I think, because Trollope is such a master of characterisation and you could tell from the beginning that there couldn’t be a happy ending for people I had quickly grown to love. I was unsatisfied with the ending because SPOILER John Bolt, who was responsible for everything that happens, was ignored and there were no consequences for his ‘noble’ ...ahem... actions. How could he end up getting his girl after ruining her family? How could anybody want him to? Why didn’t he step in and compensate the old men, whose lot in life was now worse, not better? Totally wrong. The fact that I’m so invested in the outcomes for these people shows what a skilled storyteller Trollope is. I shall move onto book two in the series, but only after I’ve taken a bit of time to recover. Also, if Trollope is the King, @coraliebickfordsmith is the Queen. Also, also, the books are resting on a lovely silk textile that I purchased on a trip to India in 2017. It’s shown here for Arpita @bagfullofbooks who asked to see.
