“If we don’t see ourselves as potentially being depicted as an icon in a Church, then we are failing ourselves”. —- Abbot Tryphon ⠀ ⠀ This is a powerful quote that dovetails deeply with what an older priest at one of our local mission parishes says. Father Michael said that in Russia - in the villages - you would see icons of Saints you’d never even heard of - They were local Saints. In Greece I found it to be the same. There were Saints in some of the smaller Churches I’ve never known. ⠀ ⠀ The word Saint in Greek is Aghios - Holy. I think in English Holy is a more approachable word than Saint- but all the same - we just don’t have many truly American Saints - yet our Faith has been here for a long long time. ⠀ ⠀ Can you think of a truly American “born” Saint? ⠀ I encourage my Sunday School kids that we know Saint Nicholas of Myra, Saint Katherine, Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Irene, Saint Nektarios, Saint Demetrios - the globetrotters - nothing but net - the Saints everyone in the whole world knows and venerates - but we also pray in the Liturgy commemorating “the Saints known and unknown”⠀ ⠀ I try to encourage those kids that they can be Holy - they are Holy - they they can be kid leaders in the Faith - and one day maybe we will see them on the walls of a Church. Because Father Michael said it in Orthodox lands it is normal - expected that you would see the icon of a Saint from the local area on the walls of the Churches. ⠀ ⠀ Our adult bible study leader told us recently that at the Dormition of the Theotokos - the Virgin Mary told the disciples - “trade your time for eternity”. ⠀ ⠀ “Trade your time for eternity” It is the way of the Saints - the way of redeeming the time the way of repentance - a life of Christ. ⠀ ⠀ To our young people - may we one day see people from our local towns villages and urban cities adorning the walls of our Churches. The Church is truly alive when she produces Saints - whether clergy monastics martyrs or regular normal people ⠀ ⠀ Maybe you even know someone right now in your life who is holy. ⠀ ⠀ It is a local movement to canonize a Saint. Icons are written of them before the official recognition by the Bishops

This is the painting for August in the 2020 Orthodox Children’s Calendar, and the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (the day we commemorate the Theotokos falling asleep in the Lord). My 3 year old has been really enjoying when I tell her all about the icons of the feasts on the walls of our church. I overheard her telling my husband “Mary was sad when Jesus went up to heaven because she missed him. But then she died and she went to heaven and was happy because she got to be with Jesus. And then they got married and lived together in heaven!” Oops! So close to being correct! We’ll get there! . . In this scene, we wanted to show one of the ways that we as Orthodox honor the departed— with koliva and memorial services. Christ is Risen! Happy Pascha to all those celebrating today! So fun story, I had a terrible migraine all last evening and night so I couldn’t go to the midnight Easter services or partake of the 3am pascha basket feast afterward. I seem to get migraines every Pascha in recent years but this is the first time I didn’t feel well enough to go to the midnight service and I’m sad about it. But I can’t complain too much, joyous resurrection!
