Let’s talk about cows. I grew up on a dairy farm in western Kentucky that my dad and uncle inherited. Two of my brothers also farmed after returning from Vietnam, plus we had hired help. The cows had to be milked twice a day - around 4:00 am and then again at about 4:00 pm. We had electric milkers that would send the milk through glass cylinders into a huge stainless steel tank. Each day a big truck would come and take the milk somewhere for processing. My mom took a big plastic pitcher up every evening and dipped out a pitcherful of raw milk for the house. I remember there being little dark flecks in it, but my dad loved it. I think only about six or eight cows could be milked at one time so there was a steady flow of cows leaving the milking platform as new ones were let in, one at a time. To let a cow in, you would pull on a rope that connected to a pulley and opened the door, behind which were all the waiting cows. I would go up in the afternoons and one of our hired helpers, Alonzo, would let me pull the rope to let in the next cow. I would sit on his rickety stool and he would help me. “Lonzo” was African-American and one of his arms had been amputated at the elbow. It had been mangled in some sort of farm equipment. I didn’t really pay a lot of attention to his arm, even though I was little and you would think I would be obsessed with it, probably because he was so kind to me. This photo shows one of our brass cow tags (#39) surrounded by some small pieces of the actual rope I used to pull. I also have the rickety stool seat. I’m a cow lover to this day, but have never been a milk drinker. I had this framed shortly after my dad died in 2002.
