Yesterday was about THEM, the kids diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and running for their social cause/ project during “Brasov Heroes” event. It was Autism Awareness Day earlier this week & I want to share something deeply personal with you today _ The first thing you should know about autism is that it is a spectrum, hence the abbreviation ASD for autism spectrum disorder. This means that there are no identical instances, but there are still many similarities _ There are certain things that come very naturally to neurotypical people which present a huge challenge to people with an ASD. Social interaction, particularly nonverbal cues can be an absolute minefield to navigate _ Sensory (over)sensitivity is also very common. Sights, smells, and sounds, are so much more intense. This makes crowded and noisy places much more scary than they already are. Because they feel stimulus so intensely, it is very important for people with an ASD to be able to withdraw somewhere quiet _ Routine is incredibly important, sacred almost. Any disruption can be met with panic & anxiety. Dealing with unexpected changes is one of the biggest challenges, especially because life is inherently unpredictable _ Now that you have an idea of what it is like, I want to talk about Val and our experiences together. She is 23 months older than me and so was getting into the swing of things when I came into the world. Just a few days later, she asked my mum when I would be going back to the hospital. This brutal honesty has stayed with her and given us some priceless moments _ She soon warmed up to me, and would throw grass into my pram so I could see what the world was like. If I had to use one word to describe Val, it would be pure. Unconditional love and genuine kindness are just two of the countless gifts she’s given us _ Growing up together had its tough moments, but we only grew closer. Every day she shows me how easy it is to be happy and fills my heart with joy _ Every person with autism has a beautiful and complex universe inside of them. My Autism journey isn’t with my children. It’s with this man. We met when I was 19 and by the time I was 22 we were married with 2 children. We dove right in. Head first. And because of this, we were still learning each other at the same time we were raising our children. I suppose that’s the same for a lot of marriages. The things my husband struggles with, what he views as his short comings, are the same things that make me gravitate toward him. He has to work at understanding me and our children, it takes effort to connect, he has to focus harder on being present so he doesn’t get lost in himself too much because he knows that we also have needs. Imagine if every married couple devoted so much of themselves to the other person? He’s taught me to do that. He taught me to love someone for exactly who they are. He has taught me so much and shows me a view of the world I would never have known without him. He is the calm to my storm. He loves our children with a fierceness day in and day out even during the hardest parts of having a 13 and 10 year old. He makes a lot of days look like a breeze, but I know the struggle and work and effort he’s put in. A lot that I feel he shouldn’t have to. That he shouldn’t have to bend so much to fit into society’s “normal” That he shouldn’t feel that burden on himself. I’ve watched him jump over hurdles that I believe if he had the support and compassion and understating that he needed as a child things would be a lot different for him. The same support that you Mamas and Dads are pouring into your children every day. Advocating for them. Raising awareness about the beautiful spectrum of Autism. Keep talking. Keep sharing your stories. Keep educating other people.
