//6 MONTHS// Does anyone else celebrate their half birthday? Mine is Christmas Day so I like to think everyone has got me a half year present hee hee! In the 1st year of a baby’s life 6 months is a pretty pivotal point - typically when both weaning + teething begin. . . The average age for first teeth to appear (normally the lower front teeth) is 6 months. Some babies are earlier, lots can be a bit later (and then sometimes babies are even born with teeth!) However this often means that when weaning commences your baby will just be using their gums to chew with. Even if baby doesn’t have teeth yet their gums will be flattening and hardening in preparation for the teeth coming through. . . In baby-led weaning babies are given whole items of food and this can sometimes be a bit scary in terms of gagging & choking risk. We all have a gag reflex – it's a lifelong automatic response to protect your airway. But for babies who are experiencing many different textures for the first time it can be triggered easily. Expressed Breastmilk This post is everything you need to know about your expressed breastmilk. . . STORING BREASTMILK • once expressed can stay at room temperature for up to 6 hours. •refrigerated for up to 6 days. •frozen for 6 months. •breastmilk that’s been refrigerated can be carried in a cool bag with ice for up to 24hours. . DEFROSTING BREASTMILK There are 2 ways you can defrost your breast milk. •defrost in the fridge. •place the frozen breastmilk (in the bag) into a warm bowl of water. I usually use the 2nd technique as it will warm the milk at the same time. . WARMING BREASTMILK You can give breastmilk straight from the fridge if they like it but myas only ever drunk warm milk. Here is a couple of ways you can warm up our milk. •place the bag in a bowl of warm water. •hold the bag under running warm water. •they advise you not to warm in the microwave only because you can get “hot spots” and this cold burn their mouths. And the main thing I never realised at first is that your milk will split (see photo for example) This is normal and once’s it’s warmed up it will mix back together ❤️ . . Reading to Kahlil is one of my favorite things, not only because I have a beautiful reading voice but because of the bonding. Now my reading list isn’t necessarily Montessori. My reading list is much more spiritually based. I read Kahlil a mixture of spiritual books in the morning and a children’s book before bed. I like to enrich him with positive spiritual ideals that don’t focus on religion necessarily but to form his own ideals revolves around self love. It has definitely been a lifesaver. Always remember to use them safely! Like with any device, you must use it properly. "Regardless of the type of carrier or sling, always avoid positioning your baby with their face pressed against the fabric or your body, or lying with a curved back with chin tucked against their chest."
