Hope everyone had a nice, long relaxing weekend! We have had an incredible stretch of unseasonably cool weather here in Phoenix and have been taking advantage of it by spending plenty of time entertaining outdoors. For this table setting, I actually grabbed my chairs from my dining room and set up a table on my lawn in the backyard. The luxurious velvet created a sense of elegance while being outdoors created a casual, adventurous atmosphere. It was a fun change to use these chairs - think outside the box when it comes to dining furniture. I wanted to share this very simple garden DIY tip. Have you heard of cloches? They’ve been around for forever. They’re basically individual plant covers, they can be plastic to keep the soil and plant warmer or a mesh/net kind of material to keep pests and birds away. . I had my eye on some plastic ones for sale (see last pic for the commercial version) but I’m really trying to avoid buying more plastics, especially for the garden since it always deteriorates so quickly and ends up in the landfilll (“UV protected” or not). Also, three of those cloches cost $20! Crazy. So I made my own with our old milk jugs instead. . I’ve actually used jugs for years but this season I took the two seconds required to solve the problem I have with milk jug cloches, they tip over and fly away extremely easily (which is why I had been eyeing those commercial ones). Even if you kinda nestle them down into the soil, they end up moving around. The solution: use a standard hole punch, punch two holes on both sides at the bottom, and then just stick some landscape staples in the holes to secure them. Now they don’t tip! Woot! You can see I also cut the hole in the top pretty big, that’s because it is so easy to fry your plants in these. I’ve found the big top hole prevents frying and still offers the extra warmth the plant wants. (My spring climate has pretty hot days but cold nights.) . Can you see the dramatic difference in growth between the 2 cucamelons in the 1st pic? These were planted at the same time, same sun, water, and soil, the only difference is that one has been growing in a cloche and one has not. The one in the jug is at least twice as big! They may be a bit of an eye sore but totally worth it. . What a wonderful day for our first Free Stand of the year! Woot woot! Usually our stand offers food but we’ve been known to change it up occasionally. Today it’s: Free Plants! And it is a beauty. We’ve got heirloom tomato starts (all amazing varieties), a couple pink celery, and I threw in some lemons. . We love having our Free Stand as a way to share our bounty with our community. We believe food justice is social justice and everyone should have access to nutritious, organic, food. We teach our kids a lot of important lessons with this stand, mostly: practice what you preach, and contribute to your community and Nature. Also, it’s really fun!! My daughter enjoys wheeling it out to the street and setting it up with me and seeing people stop and leave with smiles. We added two beds this year in the garden specifically so we could grow more for our Free Organic Food Stand. . What do you think, could you add a Free Stand to your garden plans this year? Yeah you can! Giving away food to friends and family is great, but it often keeps resources in the hands of folks who already have resources. Peppers are in! Woot! First I weeded and cleared the bed, then added a wheelbarrow full of compost + organic fertilizer, azomite and rock dust, forked it in, raked it smooth, looked at the layout with them all still in containers (so important as I always make changes, like this time I decided last minute to leave a space for an orange picnic pepper in the front because it would look gorgeous in between the violet sparkle peppers and it’s my daughters fav pepper, I’ll buy that this week), then water it in and put the irrigation back. Today I’ll mulch with fresh rice straw. Just like the tomatoes, the peppers will get covered at night with thick row fabric. It’s still a bit cold at night (48f) but their roots were telling me it was time to get them out of their pots and transplanted into the raised beds, so that’s what happened. . Letting your plants get root-bound DRAMATICALLY slows the growth and vigor of your plants. This has taken me a long time to learn. Let’s say I buy a 6 pack of red cabbages and plant 3 the day I get them from the nursery, then wait a week to plant the remaining 3, those 3 that waited and got root bound will be WEEKS behind the 3 that were planted immediately. All the seeds were planted at the same time but the 3 that waited will be significantly delayed, and will likely have more pest problems too. Seriously. It’s kinda astonishing. . Your plants need space to grow or they get stunted, there’s some powerful life metaphors in there. Plant your plants y’all!
