Escape Room
directed by Adam Robitel
Plot:
Six strangers find themselves in circumstances beyond their control, and must use their wits to survive.
Genre: Mystery, Horror, Thriller
So, from the trailer, this looks to be another January horror garbage movie, at least for me. And for a majority of the film, at least for the first 30 to 40 minutes of the film, I am actually surprised of the film, it was a pretty fun thriller at first. But as it goes along, it went downhill really fast.
Some of the performances are really good, but a lot of them are really bad. Logan Miller, Tyler Labine, and Deborah Ann Woll were quite decent, but the rest of the cast are unlikable and annoying, especially Nik Dodani.
Like I said, the film at first was a really fun thriller. The first three rooms were all really entertaining, especially the upside-down room. But from there, the movie is quite awful. Certain direction changes a lot and there are a ton of plot holes. It felt like the film just stopped trying at the end. Especially that horrendous ending, which made me scream WTF at the screen.
All in all, Escape Room could have been a really fun thriller. And for the first 40 minutes, it is. But in the end, the unlikable characters, horrible second half, and absolutely mind-numbing ending just disappointed me.
GRADE: C-

Serenity (2019)
Written and directed by Steven Knight
———————————————————
Review: Serenity (kind of silly that they called their film Serenity considering that there’s already another famous film called Serenity) is a film by Steven Knight, the man who made Locke, created Peaky Blinders, and wrote Eastern Promises. And Locke is one of my favorite films of all time, so I know what the man is capable of. So I was disappointed to see just how terrible of a film Serenity is.
This movie doesn’t have a clue at what it’s trying to be. I can’t tell if it’s trying to be a noir thriller, a comedy, or a drama. It’s just tonally all over the place, as it tries to have some dramatic and thrilling moments, but also has some scenes that look like they were ripped straight out of a Wes Anderson film.
Steven Knight is normally a pretty good writer, but I don’t like a lot of the dialogue in the movie. Some of it sounds amateurish compared to Knight’s script for Locke.
Serenity has a twist in it (not a spoiler because you shouldn’t care). Now, I respect when a filmmaker takes risks, like Shyamalan. Even in Shyamalan’s worst films, I have a lot of respect for the risks he takes. And that’s the same for Serenity. I have a lot of respect for Steven Knight and the fact that he took a big risk. The man went all in with this twist, but unfortunately, it’s easily one of the worst twists I’ve ever seen.
It’s a terrible twist for three reasons. First, things that happen in the film before the twist is revealed makes zero sense when you really think about it. Second, the twist ends up taking away pretty much al of the film’s tension, which you’ll understand why once you see it. And finally, the twist is just plain stupid. It’s just an awful idea to begin with, and it wasn’t really necessary. The film’s story is totally fine on it’s own, and it doesn’t need that twist. Not to mention, because of the twist, the story gets really confusing at the end of the film. ***CONTINUED IN COMMENTS***
The Predator is a movie starring Boyd Holbrook and Trevante Rhodes and is directed by Shane Black. The movie is about a space alien who hunts humans.
This is the second worst movie I’ve seen this year, and I have seen Truth or Dare, Skyscraper, and a countless number of shitty Netflix movies, and somehow, my fifth most anticipated movie of the year is the second worst. Christ. It’s so bad.
Performances range from mediocre, to really bad. I can see the potential in Sterling K Brown that I’ve seen in every other movie he’s been in. He can do well, his material just has to be better. Trevante Rhodes is also alright, he’s certainly got the most competent performance. It’s funny. However, there’s still crap in a crap pile, and that crap, is named Boyd Holbrook. Submitting his entry for the most generic performance of 2018, he crams all the cliched military tics and stereotypical vocal choices into one generic protagonist. The comic relief is almost worse, with Keegan Michael-Key being more annoying than a woodpecker on your roof, Augusto Aguilera just being blank, and oh my god I hate Thomas Jane in this. TOURETTE’S ISNT FUNNY! ITS NOT! THATS NOT A FUNNY JOKE! I DONT GET IT!!! The direction screams of trying too hard to be cool, with this slick facade that doesn’t nearly do enough to hide major issues. Namely the lack of interesting visuals and the clear cookie-cutterness of blockbuster filmmaking that Shane Black feels trapped in for the entirety of this movie. He had a checklist of all the cliches and just went down and stuffed as many in as he can handle. And when it made sense to stop, he shoved some more in. The amount of directing missteps in this movie made me really sad. I know Shane Black has so much talent as a director, and it really felt like some studio meddling took place. Just the total amount of cliches really shocked me.
