Pura Luhur Lempuyang is one of Bali’s nine directional temples and is of great significance to the Balinese culture and religion. Set atop Lempuyang mountain, it’s roughly halfway between Amlapura and Amed as the crow flies. The directional temples radiate around Bali with Pura Luhur Besakih (Mother Temple) at the centre — other directional temples include Uluwatu, Goa Lawah and Pasar Agung. This importance means you’ll often see Balinese families from around the island visiting in full ceremonial attire balancing large baskets of food atop their heads, with the purpose of getting it blessed by the priest at the temple at the top of the mountain. . . {A life letter I wrote at 7 AM at this very spot overlooking the ocean}⁣ ⁣ Oh Bali⁣ How you’ve opened the ephemeral door into an entire new realm of possibilities. ⁣ I feel as if an alternate dimension to life has been revealed to me and you handed me the secret keys to see it.⁣ You couldn’t make it easy for me to access it though, could you?⁣ You had to break me in first, didn’t you?⁣ Forced me to face all that I’ve been resisting for so long. You resurfaced my fears and insecurities until I was eye to eye with them. Staring into the jet black eyes of my darkness, unable to turn away and run like I always do.⁣ As I fell deeper into their black holes, a rough grip closed in on me, suffocating me, unable to breathe. I screamed out, my jaw unlocking, but no sound escaped. Instead, everything was suddenly sucked inside of me, I was choking, tears streaming down my face, my body, until I was drowing in a pool of them.⁣ This is it, I thought.⁣ This is how it ends.⁣ ⁣ And then, it stopped.⁣ ⁣ Afraid to open my eyes, for fear of still being under ash-stained waters, I fluttered one eyelid ever so slightly, and my senses were surprised to be flooded by sunlight.⁣ I just wanna see the light.⁣ Both my eyes shoot open, only to be rewarded by the most beautiful sight I have ever seen.⁣ I must be dreaming.⁣ Only in my deepest sleep could I imagine anything so stunning – nothing in the world could exist like this. And it is not just my eyes that seem to deceive me –every sense is acutely aware – even ones I didn’t know I had.⁣ As my surroundings seep into every ounce of my body and mind, I realize I am not dreaming after all.⁣ In fact, I’ve never felt so alive in my entire life.⁣ Up to this point I had been asleep.⁣ In a “living remission” for almost three decades long.⁣ But I’m awake now.⁣ How could I ever sleep again?⁣ When life is so insanely beautiful, ripe with opportunities, abundance, and everything I could ever want – I don’t want to miss a thing.⁣ Thank you Bali, for awakening me.
