Day 1 of my @banfieldpethospital internship was a successful one ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a Veterinary Student intern we spend half our time working as technicians (or assistants) and the other half working closely with & being mentored by the doctors. So far I love every staff member I met today, everybody was sooo friendly and welcoming! A Guide to Urinalysis ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 1: Refractometer - this tool is used to measure the urine specific gravity. Normal USG ranges from 1.008-1.030 for dogs. Anything above or below this range is referred to as concentrated or dilute respectively. From the picture, it is the scale on the right hand side. This patients USG was 1.014. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 2: Dip-Stick - this tool is used to determine pathological changes in the patients urine. Each little square tests a different value, and you compare the results on the strip to those indicated on the containers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Step 3: Sediment - at this point, you’re basically double-checking the results of the dip-stick. The urine is spun down, and poured off to test the little bit of sediment left at the bottom. I typically place a drop of stained & unstained urine next to each other because I like to compare, but this is a personal preference. My slide also has mineral oil on it, so I can use the 100x objective. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this sample, I was looking at the stained slide and you can see a bunch of white blood cells (larger purple circles) as well as a few red blood cells (smaller red circles). This patient did in fact have a UTI (urinary tract infection), so he was sent home on a 2 week course of Amoxicillin, which is an antibiotic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first picture shows you the common artifacts that can been seen in urine sediments, indicating other urinary issues.
