So proud of the beautiful work she does to support the craft of Mexican and Philippine artisans. Check out the incredible banig mat that now has a home in our home. It was woven by Tagolwanen weavers in Bukidnon. The organization preserves the traditional lumad skill of weaving and promotes the self-determination of indigenous women. Roseli tells me that only women in the Tagolwanen tribe can weave and they weave at night - she imagines them weaving by moonlight. When a human orders extra, I try my best to be as extra by leveling up packaging. I usually pack my goods in reused paper bags and boxes with twine but this time, the client asked to make it extra special. . When you order 10 SSASS Bags, I will put each in a handwoven seedling starter pot. These pots are lovingly handmade by Lala Ladies, a cooperative of women pandan weavers in Luisiana, Laguna. I coordinated with Ate Malou, their president, regarding my orders (bayongs as kits for our knitting class and seedling pots for packaging). When we picked them up, I was so surprised to meet Ate Malou's 13 year-old daughter, Krystal, who was too bored for summer that she made the pots to keep herself occupied! As it was a struggle for weavers to pass on to the next generations the culture of pandan weaving, having their children involved and keeping them interested is a milestone. . I have been coordinating with them in sourcing for sustainable alternatives in packaging to support circular economy and fair trade. ♥️ They are having a hard time transporting their goods, so I visit them personally. 2/3 Team Spirit The weavers first became famous for their colourful banig mats during pre-colonial times. “Banig” literally means mat. They’re making other product categories now and are very open to weaving new things! One of the first details I suggested was a double-sided embroidered mat, so commuters can show off the design on both sides when it’s rolled up. They said the grass is too tight to embroider the leaves in both sides but they didn’t hesitate to try. And they made it work! I’m always impressed by their positive attitude to try new things.
