Friends, this is the very happy faces of two very happy grape growers/winemakers/wine sellers. Welcome to Wine Wednesday, sweet pals! It’s been too long since Tessa The Wine Heeler has paid tribute to her heritage, so she is super stoked to be tasting a 2016 Penfold’s Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz. A lovely blend of five different Aussie wine regions, it’s quite young but so lovely and balanced. Unlike too many big, overblown, alcoholic, sweet, blueberry-tinged Shiraz, this is perfectly balanced, multi-layered and precise, with seamless oak and alcohol nicely integrated, like a cool-weather Syrah. Deep garnet color. Cascading layers of red fruits like currents and raspberries, spices, dried lavender, tar, licorice, savory spices, coffee, and a long finish with cleansing acidity. So nice and reasonably priced, too. Delicious with grilled chicken sausages. The 2009 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz. The nose is stunning - cherry compote, various spices, dark cherries and mocha strong and confident. The palate is sheer perfection - plums, blueberries and blackberries just sing but don’t unbalance the wine in any way. Tannins, oak and acidity all pulling in the same direction. The finish has a wonderous red fruit lift - raspberries, red cherries and cranberries add complexity and gravitas and a light menthol aftertaste rounds it off magnificently.
