✨MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK ✨ . A bit of a different, but ever so important one today. . The stats (Royal College of Psychiatrists): One in four adults will have a mental health problem at some point in their life . One in two adults with debts has a mental health problem . One in four adults with a mental health problem is in debt. . It's also worth saying that debt isn't the only source of financial stress. There are infinite reasons for financial worry: relationship breakdown, job loss etc. . It's a vicious cycle: money worries affect our mental health and poor mental health makes managing money harder. Without support, it’s a recipe for financial and mental health disaster. . The good news. There is SO much help out there. Head over to my stories where I’ll be sharing loads of brilliant resources and a guide to money and mental health. If you have any tips or resources you’d be happy to share, please do! . Happy Friday, I hope you all have the best weekend . 6/7 BODY+PERCEPTION || How we look affects how society treats us. The brain likes efficiency and, to save effort, makes assumptions about psychological traits based on physical ones. So we assume that smaller people are child-like; emotionally fragile and needing more care, whilst taller, bigger people are assumed to be robust and self-sufficient. Obviously, this is an error and we have seen how this leads to men being shamed for showing their feelings, with sometimes tragic consequences. I see this happen to tall girls/women too. When a girl is tall it is easy to assume she is more mature than she really is. ‘You’re a big girl’ is a common way of saying ‘you’re a grown up, you should be able to handle this’. But, of course, the fact that someone has inherited genes that make them taller than average has no relation to their emotional maturity or resilience. But tall girls/women are seen as ‘mature’ or ‘intimidating’, with other people (inc. professionals) often unable to see past their imposing physicality to their emotional needs. Height also shapes society’s view of femininity, which is typically associated with being ‘petite’. Fairy tale princesses are ‘dainty’, so small and light they can be picked up and carried when they are rescued. Traditionally, marriage started with the groom carrying the bride over the threshold. Whilst this practice is now rare, its position in society and our minds is cemented. To be feminine/attractive is to be small. ° [The exception to this, the golden ticket for a tall girl, is if she is very slim. That way she may be told ‘you could be a model’ and in our society being a model i.e. being highly prized for your physical attractiveness is still considered one of the highest accolades a woman can achieve.] But if you're a tall girl of average build then, according to our cultural norms, you are just ‘big’. And big is not feminine. You often see tall women compensate for this, either by trying to lose weight or by stooping and hunching. Whatever they can do to take up less space and appear smaller. These are a few of my thoughts. What do you think? Does your height (taller or shorter) affect the assumptions made about you

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19th May) focuses on a theme that affects (or has affected) most people at some point in their life: how they see themselves when they look in the mirror. Body image issues are a common problem in a society that promotes unrealistic body ideals - but this week, the message is simple: love yourself just the way you are. BE BODY KIND ☀️ It’s Mental health awareness week in the U.K. and this years theme is body image- how we think and feel about our bodies. Minor trigger warning. I’ve always been muscular since I can remember from dancing and also just from pure genetics. I would see women in media with their societally accepted “feminine” bodies and think mine was wrong. At school I was teased by my classmates regularly when getting changed for P.E with things like “you look like a boy, you should be in the boys room.” I also used to go to musical theatre school where our bodies were constantly analysed. Slight weight gain- commented on. Our bodies were also compared with each other’s. I also used to be signed to a record label in 2013. Comments were made about my body which instigated me to try and lose my muscle and lose weight (This was at the time in the image with the blonde wig sat on the chair). Photo editors were asked to edit out my skin where it was pinching over my skirt. (Green outfit) All of these experiences lead up to me having unhealthy, negative thoughts about my body. About how I wasn’t ideal. Some of these pictures I haven’t looked at since the time they were made and I am shocked, I looked so small. I don’t blame my classmates, my record label, my old school MT/ dance teachers. It’s something most people internally struggle with because we’ve been told for generations what is “ideal”, what is “healthy”. But I hope slowly people will become aware how harmful this is and how different every body is. I believe we are getting there gradually. But not fast enough. I’ve realised how harmful it is to me and to you for me to pose at certain angles so you can’t see how thick and muscular my legs are. To hide my stomach. To wear “flattering” sleeves to hide how “manly” my arms look. My mind is now healthier, my body is now the fittest it has ever been. Once I accepted how my body was meant to be, I’ve noticed a huge difference. I can dance for hours. I have so much energy. I’m the most vibrant I have ever been. I’m so so thankful for my body. I will look after you, you deserve all the positivity for keeping me alive. I will #bebodykind
