It can be so easy to forget that in order to get our bikes into transition we may roll it across the car park, we may ride from the hotel, however the bike gets onto the rack, there’s a chance that a piece of debris could have been picked up on route. To every athlete racing IRONMAN Nice and IRONMAN Frankfurt, be safe out there. The heat is something you all should take seriously. Fast times, personal bests and absolute physical exertion should be a very distance thought when planning your race approach for tomorrow. The forecast is extreme and the need to respect that is bigger than ever. My advice would be to acknowledge that tomorrow is not the day for personal records and that the accomplishment of getting to the finish line is amplified more than ever given the heat. Be smart and prioritize controlling body temperature over anything. You can do this by managing your effort and cooling/shading yourself as best as possible. Take special attention to not raise your core temperature too much when swimming, just because you are in the water and it might feel refreshing, you will already be increasing your core temperature if you don’t manage your effort and respect the heat. If you’re racing and have last minute questions that can put your mind at ease, just write below. • This picture was taken back in 2016. It was after a long ride where I was supposed to hit some high watts. The heat and humidity meant I couldn’t access the power. Today’s #HotTopic in focus...Open water sighting. Some experience, thoughts and key tips passed on from me to you If you struggle with sighting and it’s not fluent, don’t expect to nail it quickly. Be patient and practice. Effective sighting is when it becomes an incorporated part of your stroke. It should feel fluent. “Practice makes perfect”, I know it’s an ageless saying but it’s meaningful, especially with sighting in open water. • Remember we sight with our eyes, we don’t need too much other than our eyes to rise above the surface. • Always try to find a sighting marker that’s higher than the surface. A fixed object like a tree, a building, just something that could help you stay on course and obviously something that doesn’t move like the clouds.
