A beluga whale wearing a tight harness spotted by fishermen off the coast of Norway may have been trained by the Russian military, Norwegian scientists have claimed. The whale has been approaching boats and trying to rub off the straps, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported. After seeing a video of the whale, staff from Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries’ Marine Service went out to find it and attracted it with cod fillets. A fisherman got into the water with the whale and managed to take off the harness, according to the VG newspaper. The whale then swam around the boat a few times before swimming off. The words “Equipment of St Petersburg” were printed on the inside of the harness. There is a long history of whales and dolphins being trained for military purposes by various countries. The US Navy began a dolphin research programme in the 1960s that led to dolphins being deployed to defend ships in Vietnam. Russia launched its own programme during the Cold War, training dolphins to plant bombs and detect abandoned ships. Ukraine’s navy began a dolphin programme in 2012, but the animals fell into Russia’s hands with the annexation of Crimea in 2014. A Ukrainian government representative claimed that the dolphins died “patriotically” by going on hunger strike and refusing to cooperate with the Russians. Zvevda, a TV station owned by the Russian military, reported in 2017 that the navy was training beluga whales, seals and dolphins for military use in polar waters. According to The Guardian, Murmansk Sea Biology Research Institute investigated whether beluga whales could guard entrances to naval bases and kill strangers who enter their territory. However, the research concluded that whales were not suited to working in arctic waters and lacked the “high professionalism” of seals. A friendly beluga whale has been spotted over the last few days in the region of #Finnmark, #Norway. It was apparent that the whale was in need of assistance since there was an odd harness attached to his/her body. Thanks to these people, the harness is no longer attached to this beautiful and wild animal. Due to the harness, it is suspected this beluga has escaped captivity from the Russian military and somehow made its way over to the area.

By now you've heard of the #beluga whale suspected of being a Russian military deserter, first sighted by Norwegian fishermen last week wearing a harness and possible camera mount. Humans have been training dolphins and sea lions to carry out military tasks for nearly 60 years, a highly controversial practice. Stories abound that sound like terrible science fiction novels but which are, as far as we can tell, fairly credible. There were the Ukrainian army dolphins allegedly armed with pistols and knives strapped to their heads. Or, during the Cold War, Soviet dolphins who were deployed "with hypodermic syringes loaded with carbon dioxide," according to @theatlantic. Finally, there are oral histories of dolphins wearing parachutes in order to be air-dropped into conflict zones without detection. Maybe that's why this one was wearing a harness? Thanks to Jørgen Ree Wiig (@wiiiig), one of the Norwegian fisherman who cut off the harness and reported this incident to local authorities, for sharing his footage. #oceanx . . . #belugawhale #spywhale #russia #russianspy #spy #jamesbond #Norwegian #norway #fishermen #fisherman #fishing #cetacean #wildlife #animal #marineanimal #marinewildlife #marinemammal #sealions #military #blueplanet2 #wtf
