Officials in Russia have charged the owners of a Far East "whale prison" keeping some 100 orcas and belugas in small, crowded pools.⁣

Earlier this month, a nationwide beluga whale trade occurred between five marine parks across the United States. This mass trade was carried out to “promote the genetic diversity of beluga whales in professional care, enhance healthy populations, provide socialization between individuals, and sustain the species through breeding programs.” . • Naluark, a 32-year-old male beluga who is currently recovering from pneumonia, was transferred from SeaWorld Orlando to SeaWorld San Antonio. • Whisper, a 19-year-old female beluga, was transferred from SeaWorld Orlando to the Georgia Aquarium. • Natasha, a 37-year-old female beluga, was transferred from SeaWorld San Antonio to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. • Grayson, an 11-year-old male beluga, was transferred from the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago to SeaWorld Orlando. • Oliver, another 11-year-old male beluga, was transferred from SeaWorld San Antonio to SeaWorld Orlando. • Imaq, a 31-year-old male beluga, was transferred from SeaWorld San Antonio to the Georgia Aquarium. . While this trade was apart of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’s (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), the wellbeing of the individual animals was seemingly disregarded. Although the trades were carried out under the AZA’s recommendations and SSP, that does not mean the individual animals were not negatively affected by this or that the species as a whole benefited. The SSP cannot save wild belugas without the process of reintroduction and it’s clear that future beluga calves produced under this “plan” will not be released. Mother's Day is coming, so here's some beautiful footage by @paulnicklen of hundreds of beluga whales swimming in shallow water estuaries with their newborn calves.

Disturbing footage has surfaced from Port of Nagoya Aquarium. The footage taken in 2017 shows the aquarium’s belugas viciously fighting amongst themselves. One individual in particular (a male named Khudoy) receives the brunt of the attack, sustaining a nasty wound that bleeds profusely for several minutes. As this injured beluga swims past the glass his countless scars and shredded skin become visible, indicating he is frequently the victim of excessive aggression. Confined within four concrete walls and deprived of any means to escape, Khudoy is forced to endure every bite, rake, ram and tail slap inflicted upon him. They now join the exclusive list of mammalian species that previously consisted of only humans, killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and false killer whales. . The authors of this recent publication analyzed physiological data on ovarian activity of 16 toothed whale species; they discovered post-reproductive lifespans in narwhals and belugas, and supported the existing evidence on short-finned pilot whales. Through phylogenetic tracing, they also found that “post-reproductive lifespans have evolved independently three times in toothed whales: once at some point before the separation of the beluga and narwhal lineages, once in the lineage leading to short-finned pilot whales, and once in the lineage leading to killer whales.” . The benefits of menopause? You might argue it would make more sense to continuously pump out offspring until death, as most animals do. However, humans and some toothed whales differ from the rest of the animal kingdom in that they are both complex, social species that form lifelong familial relationships. This means that a cutoff for female reproduction allows for mature (and wiser!) individuals to invest their energy and resources into their progeny—be it knowledge, food, or protection—thus maximizing the potential for the survival of genes in immediate relatives.
