I’ve always been self-conscious about my small breasts, but swore to never have plastic surgery. I became intimate with a college friend, but realized that I did not want to date him. Presumably out of revenge, or maybe even because of his own insecurities, he made very hurtful comments about my breasts. I was also working as a server at a sports bar and almost every other server/bartender there had real or fake large breasts. I did my research and after finding out about possible cosmetic (ONLY) complications disclosed by my plastic surgeon and by the Internet, I decided it was worth the risk. When someone recently mentioned that my breast implants could be attributing to my many ailments, I thought, “What do my implants have to do with these seemingly unrelated problems?” • Fatigue • Hair loss • Adult acne • Recurring UTIs and yeast infections • Candida overgrowth • Symptoms of Lupus • Rashes • Sensitivity to sunlight • Joint pain • Dry skin and eyes • Brain fog • Depression • Low libido • Food intolerance • All of these symptoms, and many more, are linked to Breast Implant Illness (BII). I DID IT! I am on the healing side! Yesterday I had my Explant Surgery! Im sharing due to the positive feedback i received about sharing this process. I hope I can help other women make a educated choice when it comes to what we put in our bodies. As i was never told ALL of the risks back in 2013. Obviously my main concern was the risk of BIA ALCL which i became aware of when Sadie was born. This is a cancer linked to my exact Allergan textured implants. I sat at a 20% increased risk, too bloody high! 80 confirmed cases in Australia, 3 deaths. All with these textured implants. My concerns for the last 2 years were pain related - i got told by my original surgeon nothing was to worry about when Rayne was about 6 months old and i went to get checked because it didnt feel right. After another pregnancy with Sadie, and feeding for 4 months - the pain was to worrying, i went for a second opinion - was more educated in the ALCL Risks also by this point... but my explant surgeon suspected capsular contracture as the cause to my pain. I also stopped breastfeeding as there was no way to tell if there was any nasties getting into my milk. My implants felt that (sorry) fucked, that my confidence had completly gone and i felt sadie was safer on formula. I am now on day 1 post explant and have just found out that it was infact capsular contracture - which my first surgeon ignored, but my body had also formed 2 capsules around each implant. Capsules are what the bodys immune defence forms - its like a layer of skin around the implant to protect you from a forign object. In my case, my body had formed 2! My immune system was really trying to fight of these implants. Which because they fighting them so hard, my immune system has been slow, low and not working with me. My capsules have now been sent to pathology to be tested for any sign of ALCL/Silicone. “ Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself . Today was my day, the day I decided to take my life back! I contemplated making this post because it’s quite personal but I knew I needed to share my story! . When I was 20 I had my first of 4 boys. If you’re a mamma, you know the number it can do on your body so I decided to get breast implants. I was told numerous times how safe they were and that they could last a lifetime. I wouldn’t need them changed unless there was a rupture. . Shortly after surgery I started having strange symptoms. I was put on medication for Hashimoto’s disease. My thyroid grew and grew, even started growing cysts and nodules. I then started having extreme anxiety and panic attacks, migraines, insomnia, ringing in the ears, body rashes and decline in vision. Then I was diagnosed with IBS and arthritis. I developed numb hands/feet and face, brain fog, a HUGE list of food intolerances, hard time swallowing and joint pain. My quality of life was declining. Some nights I prayed that I would make it through to the next morning. I got a text one day from my friend @cvega2121 asking if she thought my breast implants could be making me sick? I’ll be honest, I was ignorant at first, even joked about it... She begged me to look up #breastimplantillness. I cried for 3 days straight after I saw the damage implants can cause. I was so insecure and I couldn’t imagine going back to my pre baby body again! I went to my Dr. and had every blood test possible, I was determined to prove people wrong but every single test came back normal! This could only mean one thing.. it WAS my implants that were making me sick! I waited 6 months for a consultation with a specialist in #explant surgery. He told me that indeed my implants needed to come out for me to get better. My body was doing everything to fight them off. I also had grade lV and grade III capsular contractures. It’s been a roller coaster getting to this point and today I finally removed my implants early this morning I had a full enbloc capsulectomy and reconstruction surgery. To my fellow BII survivors and sufferers.... please let this continue to ignite the fire within you to advocate and educate women everywhere. We CANNOT control what the FDA ultimately decides to do but we CAN control how we react to it! FDA results from our Public Hearing in March! There are LOTS of mixed emotions in our community. We are vulnerable, many women still sick, many battling BIA-ALCL... so this is raw for everyone. Personally, I am looking at this as a WIN! We ARE being heard! The best part about this is that is our voices are growing louder and we will continue to educate and advocate. UNFORTUNATELY they will NOT be banning textured implants at this time. The ARE considering a black box warning! The ARE going to encourage medical professionals to become more aware of the adverse effects of implants so they can better protect their patients. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. There are 3 years between the photo on the left and the photo on the right. Same top, same precious Pierre Bear, same diet, same physical activity but the photo on the right is the new me. It’s the me who has fought so hard and has taken my own life back despite many people telling me that I was just “sensitive” or that it was all in my head.⁣ ⁣ Today is Breast Implant Illness Awareness day and I am SO thankful to be alive today and on the other side of this awful epidemic that is happening to women across the world. The FDA recently announced that ALL BREAST IMPLANTS pose a risk of developing cancer, specifically BIA-ALCL (a cancer of the immune system) - NOT just textured silicone implants. Every single implant has a silicone shell, the difference is only the filing, whether that be a saline mixture or a silicone gel. There are textured implants as well as smooth implants. Breast Implant Illness does not discriminate what kind of implant it is or who it happens to. The implants do NOT have to be ruptured or leaking for people to experience #BII. Mine weren’t.⁣ ⁣ My life has been forever changed because of the brave women before me that shared their own personal, heart wrenching stories. I made a promise to myself that I would continue to pay it forward in hopes of being a light for others so that they too can connect the dots. No one should have to suffer like we have or feel so alone.⁣ ⁣ I am almost 8 months since my explant surgery and I really do have my life back.
