PIET MONDRIAN ▫️ Composition No. 1 with Grey and Red | 1938 | @guggenheim_venice ▫️ "Art is not made for anybody and is, at the same time, for everybody." -Piet Mondrian ▫️ My favorite work from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection — because there’s more to Venice than the Biennale! ▫️ Mondrian’s pared down interpretations of reality are among the most iconic paintings in history. Each work employs a perfectly balanced, asymmetrical grid that renders the world through vertical and horizontal lines. Mondrian’s palette was famously limited to the primary colors (red, yellow, blue), but this painting is even more reductive, with a single note of red at the bottom of the canvas. I think this work is special because it highlights the fact that Mondrian was more interested in lines than color. To Mondrian, vertical and horizontal lines embodied the opposing forces of nature. Seeking to find harmony in these inherently contradictory elements, Mondrian worked religiously to achieve perfect balance in his hand-painted (no rulers!) compositions.

VENICE BIENNALE ▪️ Nordic Pavillion “Weather Report: Forecasting Future” Janne Nabb, Maria Teeri, Ane Graff, Ingela Ihrman ▪️ I finally found the time to share some highlights from Venice! The main attraction of last week’s trip was without a doubt the Venice Biennale. The Biennale is pretty much the Olympics for the art world: every two years, nearly 100 countries converge in the Floating City to present new and exciting art by emerging artists and established stars. Each country selects an artist to represent them at their national pavilion (essentially a small gallery). Coinciding with these intimate pavilion shows is a massive, international exhibition that’s curated in response to an annual theme; this year’s theme is “May You Live In Interesting Times.” ▪️ The Nordic Pavilion is unique because it represents a coalition between Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This year they put on a fantastic show called “Weather Report: Forecasting Future.” Tackling the complex relationship between humans and nature, the exhibition stresses the harmful effects of climate change on our environment. “Weather Report” strikes a surprisingly upbeat tone, promoting coexistence between humans and other living organisms through an array of large-scale sculptures and video installations (and real trees!). The artists found a perfect balance between politics and art — delivering a crisp and clear message while still presenting aesthetically beautiful works of art. ▪️ The Nordic Pavilion is also an architectural marvel. The timeless structure was conceived in 1962 by architect Sverre Fehn. Consisting of a single massive room, the building works in harmony with its natural surroundings, and is anchored by three trees that grow through the ceiling (perfect for the current exhibition, btw). The pavilion is also flooded with natural light, which pours through the slender concrete lamellae that stand in lieu of a typical roof. The Nordic coalition is lucky to have such a fantastic building, since most countries are stuck in dated pavilions that have tiny rooms and poor natural light.

MARTIN PURYEAR ▫️ “Liberty” | U.S. Pavillion | Venice Biennale ▫️ Happy 4th of July! In honor of Independence Day, I’m sharing some highlights from the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which housed a fantastic show by the American artist Martin Puryear. Puryear’s minimalist sculptures incorporate historical references that bring to light the social and political dynamics that define our world. Each work in “Liberty” carries a powerful and thought-provoking story, conveying Puryear’s theme of liberty through elegant, minimalist forms. ▫️ The red sculpture in the first slide is actually a huge version of the hats worn during the French Revolution, and the black sculpture in second slide similarly depicts the Union’s hats from the American Civil War. Both of these works remind us that liberty and freedom aren’t necessarily free — they come at the steep cost of revolution and war. ▫️ The work in the third slide was without a doubt the most powerful. Titled, “A Column for Sally Hemings,” the tall, slender sculpture sits in the center of the pavilion, anchoring the entire exhibition. The work is a monument for Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman who had an unconsentual sexual relationship with Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Puryear wanted to acknowledge Jefferson’s troubling past because the U.S. Pavilion is styled after Jefferson’s plantation in Virginia, Monticello. ▫️ The fourth work, titled “New Voortrekker,” represents the delicacy of colonization. The Dutch title references the Great Trek, the journey of Dutch settlers through colonial South Africa. In Puryear’s sculpture, the wagon, a symbol of colonization, is perfectly balanced on a wooden plank.
