As part of her ‘Material Futures’ project this year she created architectural bioplastics and won the print prize with her exquisite designs. I have been a tutor on the Material Futures project for the past three years and look forward to see the fantastic work of the students at the degree show in June. . . "For this project I wanted to incorporate kitchen waste in #bioplastics to give it colour and texture. I used #sustainablematerials such as orange peel, egg shells, coffee grounds, onion peel and hay. However, working with bioplastics is a challenge because they are not easy to control: it is a boiling hot, sticky paste. #RecipeforMaterialActivism helped me understand the best ways to control it. Using syringes and molds while it was hot allowed the paste to take the shape of the container. Biodegradable plastics are plastics that are water soluble and broken down by microorganisms like fungi (Cho, 2017). They are made from renewable materials like cornstarch, cellulose, and sugar cane (Chen, 2014, p. 227). They must be made out of 20% or more natural resources. But are these alternatives really as sustainable as they are marketed? In my YouTube video, I will breakdown the issues of plastic and compare them to bioplastics, glass, paper, reusables, as well as other more sustainable alternatives for packaging through a few case studies. Another study found that, “Although fossil fuels are not used to make many bioplastic products, they are typically used to power manufacturing plants” (Washam, 2010, p. 1). Some of the issues with biodegradable plastics is that it needs light and oxygen to breakdown, but many waste facilities currently bury that waste. It also requires high temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius which is an issue for temperate and colder climates (Kubowicz, S., & Booth, 2017, p. 12059; UN Environment, 2016). It also does not break down properly in the ocean according to the UN. The bigger issue is that most cities do not have adequate composting facilities for bioplastics. For example, in Toronto, biodegradable plastics are prohibited from compost bins because the city says “it is very difficult for some residents to distinguish the difference as the products look very much like regular plastic” (City of Toronto, 2018). Please check your local waste facilities to see if they actually take biodegradable plastics before throwing them in your compost. Please share this to spread awareness on biodegradable plastics!
