I don’t share as much about my shop on here as I used to. Since splitting to a separate shop account last summer I try to keep it more homestead, life, homeschool, Alaska over here. But this picture makes me happy and there may be some new faces here that don’t know what I do. For 3yrs now I’ve been making baskets and other birch bark decor item from bark I harvest from our firewood. This helps cut down the creosote build up in our chimney and provides income for our family. Ryan @woodlandernorth owns a small shop as well making handsewn leather goods that has been our main income for over 5yrs now. We know the value of handmade and try to support small shops whenever we can. That’s part of why I love our IG community. Our home is filled with handmade pieces from across the country and I love putting a face/name to pieces in my home. 2019 is my third year in business and I can’t wait to see where it takes me. Just in the month of January I shipped a little bit of my Alaskan home to 31 states! You guys are amazing and I appreciate all the love and support you give us. Each basket, balm, and tincture goes towards keeping our lives going out here in the bush. This armful of baskets will be listed for sale today at 8pm EST. Finally ... made my first birchbark-container. Although I photographed many container workshops over the last years, I never cam around to make one myself. ☺️ Last Saturday my wife and I participated in the workshop given by Siegurd.nl. Usually I'm one of the assistant instructors, but it's great to be a participant every now and than... So after all this time I worked on my first one. What a great material this bark. And the crafting was so very relaxing... Think a new bug has bitten me... . . I'm pretty pleased with the result (for now... )... Peeling winter bark. We are getting ready to begin making makak (birch bark buckets for sap and other storage) and a Jiiman (canoe). Winter bark has this amazing property, where its phloem latches on to the outer bark, leaving a surface that can be etched (scratched away) to make beautiful designs.
