It’s not about the way it looks, it’s about the way it feels. People come to yoga for a number of reasons. None are for us to judge. Teach the practice and trust that it enough!

THE 4th TRIMESTER. This photo wasn’t “for the gram”. It was for showing the little humans it brought into this world, one day down the road. Because although I don’t like the term “real women” or “real bodies”, it’s important to me that (both) my children know what women really look like, what bodies really do. They’ll know what society likes the woman to look like, but also what a pregnant and breastfeeding and postpartum woman looks like, the woman/mama who is happy and healthy and thriving, but also the woman/mama that’s struggling and tired and trying. So, these pictures were for that but I thought it might be fitting for this as well. I wanted to share that this week I was diagnosed with mild-moderate postpartum depression. Knowing numerous women who have experienced this, I knew the signs and was open to the chances (although you kind of always think “not me” though). It’s not going to become a dark, gloomy place here. I still like pretty pictures and love my kids and have good days. But I stopped feeling hungry, being happy, getting ANY rest, wanting to do things, believing I was a good mother, or getting any work done — in the last couple weeks and I feel as though we have a duty to be honest about some things in this space, in order to not misconstrue how real life unfolds. A lot of people come out after the storm, and share that they were in the trenches and faking happy, perfect, fine, all along. But I think it could be beneficial if we chose vulnerability more often and admitted we aren’t doing 100% IN THE MOMENT sometimes. So here I am, TRYING to keep it to the point and sharing just that — in case there’s anyone on the other side of this screen that needs the push to admit they’re not feeling well, or get help, or even for those who HAVE and just need to know that other people are going through sh*t, look like sh*t, feel like sh*t too. If you don’t take time to tend to your wellness, you will be forced to take time to tend to your illness. If you feel unwell, mama or not, I encourage you to speak up! Because the way you want to live and the way you want to feel is just on the other side of that. #takebackpostpartum #4thtrimesterbodies

I don’t typically share videos of my practice on Instagram because it’s not really “Instagram Pretty”. Most of the time it’s filled with falls, grunts, stumbles and crazy facial expressions. Even this video wasn’t taken to be posted, but for me to see the backbend in my body. But after I watched it, I thought it was worth sharing. Backbends are NOT my thing. And I’ve been terrified to use the wall as a prop because I just KNEW my shoulder was going to break. But here we are... Fear is a construct! . Wearing @spiritualgangster

it is problematic for yoga teachers + communities to posit yoga as a practice to help us to simply cope + endure injustice, oppression, or exclusion. instead, i see yoga as a tool to support us in thinking more critically about the reality and impact of these experiences and use that awareness to get from one place to another. this is how we can use yoga as a tool and practice for liberation. . .. i am super excited to be talking about yoga, meditation, and the ways in which our personal practice is essential to change with my brother @manojdias_ of @_aspace on the @lululemonausnz instagram live today at 5:30 pm EST. . .. this is a great conversation for those interested in the inspiration behind @ylacamp . .. tag a friend below, or ask specific questions below within the subjects of: yoga education dismantling systems of oppression creating more inclusive yoga spaces understanding our position, impact, and power in a world that can be unjust . . .. . #trustblackwomen

S E R E N A : W I L L I A M S The recent stories, the photos, the emotion all resonate with me as I reflect on my own experiences as a Black woman who travels in and out of multiple yoga spaces around the world. When I’m asking, demanding, schooling folks on my worth and what it takes for me to hold space for other people once i get there. Don’t get me wrong, I have been treated with an infinite amount of care by some. I have also been told to stop complaining and be happy with what I’m getting because “this industry” is “like this for everyone,” by others. No, it’s not. It is not the same for everyone. If this were the case, we wouldn’t have the stats on salary and wage gaps that leave women, and more specifically, Women of Color at the bottom of the barrel. This is what’s different for me in this body: 1. Negotiating my worth when I am often the ONLY Black woman on billing. 2. Being questioned about my presence when I’m the yoga teacher. “Are you here for yoga? Is this your first time?” 3. Having my seat and class questioned on flights when the glory of God has awarded me first class, chile! All of this just to get to my destination and hold space for people to heal. 4. Questioning my visibility even after I am hired because marketing.... 5. Teaching and traveling through places that have historically been traumatizing and dangerous for descendants of enslaved Africans. And still being expected to show up regardless of what I had to go through to get there. 6. Risking being labeled "angry" and "aggressive" because I'm asking for too much. 7. Risking being labeled a token for showing up and not asking for enough. Damn! Speaking up in this body has consequences. Being Black and woman has consequences. I’m grateful for Serena’s courage and the courage of Black women in particular who speak up even when the consequences seemingly result in a loss. There is no loss when you speak up for your worth. PS. And Serena still lifted and celebrated her little sister Naomi through it all! “Won’t you celebrate with us that everyday something has tried to kill us and has failed.” -Lucille Clifton photo by: @rossyoga

There was a time in my life when rising with the sun felt like a cruel thing. I didn’t want to breathe. I didn’t want to drag these heavy bones that ached with depression + confusion another day. Eventually, I got tired of this way of living and decided to get going on doing the work.
