On Saturday we attended the open day at the Redbridge Guide Dog training school. Lucy got to make friends and we had lots of fun meeting everyone. It is amazing to go back to where I first met Lucy and she definitely recognised a few people. It was a wonderful day and the Disney themed dog displays were brilliant not to mention the delicious cake! Do you ever wonder where our puppies come from? The answer is actually from all over North America! Guide Dogs of America's breeding program is part of a service dog breeding cooperative. As a member of the co-op we share our genetics with service dog schools all across the United States and Canada. We will send/receive stud dog genetics by mail, or send our female breeders to other schools to have puppies. This allows for us to keep our inbreeding coefficient down and continue to breed strong, intelligent guide dogs! Teamwork and patience on both sides...these haircuts may look easy now but I remember not that far back I would have someone ready with his helmet and blankets if it would get violent as it did on several occasions. I had so much anxiety with him and often felt defeated at times. The doctor told us to prepare as ages 18-21 would be are toughest years dealing with Paulys aggression and they were 100% right. We saw our share of bumps and bruises and was literally Paulys punching bag for a short time as his strength is beyond normal. We knew it was his body changing and hormones etc and him being unable to see and talk his frustration would settle in. To say it was difficult would be a understatement but you do what you have to do. Now that he's 22 we've definitely seen a drastic change for the better. We just take things one day at a time and enjoy his smiles... At the end of the day i share these videos and our journey as I know many other families that are dealing with similar situations. The hardest part for me was feeling all alone and that nobody else could relate but I hope to share with others that we need to help motivate, inspire and lift eachother up during the tough times. Finally I asked for a manager and the waitress looks pissed as hell but goes to get them. The manager heard me out, gave me a straw, then turned to the waitress and whispered "people like that arent worth it just give them the damn straw." I was so frustrated... I started crying. My dad got up and followed back to the front where he let her have it. He had to let me handle it up to that point because I asked him to."
