Tomorrow’s dive site........ the Blue Hole. Brought to fame by Jacques Cousteau in 1971 in his ‘The Undersea World’ television series, it is now considered one of the best dive sites in the world. Measuring 1,000ft across and 450 feet deep, it’s the world’s largest underwater sink hole. It is part of the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef in the word and was declared an UNESCO Heritage Site. Giant stalactites, dripstone sheets and columns can be found inside the Blue Hole which scientists believe were formed in a dry caves above sea level during glacial periods as long as 153,000 years ago. Due to the very little oxygen at the deepest part of the hole, there is little marine life to be seen below the first 10 meters apart from the odd elusive shark. @Queensland’s #GreatBarrierReef really is full of natural wonders and surprises. According to marine biologist @johnny_gaskell, this aptly named #BlueHole in the @gbrmarinepark “sits within a massive shallow reef flat that can only be accessed in perfect conditions. Inside was about 30 Grey reef sharks, a few Whitetip reef sharks, a Tawny nurse shark, three green sea turtles and a ridiculous amount of fish... all crammed in a hole only 80 metres wide.” Sounds like a busy spot! Diving down to explore the Blue Hole in Gozo. This dive site lies near to the famous Azure Window, which sadly collapsed after stormy weather hit in March 2017. The Blue Hole is incredible in its own right. With a maximum depth of 15m there is an underwater archway at around 9m which you can swim through in to the beautiful blue sea. Legendary blue hole - underwater vertical cave. It is a karst dip surrounded by coral reefs about 130 meters deep. From the depth of 52-55 meters the cave with the sea connects the passage. Hanging over the passage of the corals have formed a kind of arch. The traditional route for divers consists of diving through bells (also in the photo), passing through the walls of the reefs and entering the Blue Hole through the upper isthmus called the Arch Saddle (at a depth of 6-7 meters). You can choose from water. Thus, familiarity with this dive site does not require dives deeper than 20-30 meters. The notoriety of the Blue Hole was created by divers who performed dives in this place, without sufficient qualifications and without the appropriate equipment. The deceiving simplicity of the passage of the Arch with one balloon with recreational equipment often leads to a sad ending. The reason for this - nitrogen anesthesia and depletion of air during ascent. In memory of the divers who died in the Blue Hole, a memorial was created on the shore. However, due to the large number of such divers, they stopped putting down "signs" with the names of the dead, as this scares tourists. In addition, freedivers are immersed here to this day. Natalya Molchanova is the first and only woman in the world today who made the passage of the arch in one breath.

Belize’s Blue Hole is a dream for scuba divers, but only a few dare to explore the region’s labyrinth of caves. Although safety is the number one concern when cave diving, experienced divers think Belize's caves in particular are worth the risk. Underwater exploration has long fascinated adventurous types, and many scuba divers are drawn to this portion of the Caribbean partly because it’s chock-full of incredible geological formations and partly because of the treasures those formations hide.
