Black Dragon Bog is the first of three (or four) Dungeons & Dragons book and recordings from Kid Stuff. Kid Stuff put out dozens of these things tied to every kid culture property imaginable and I kind of love them even though they are routinely pretty hard to listen to. ¶ Basically, you read the story book along with the recording, which has a little chime to tell you when to turn the page. This one sees our old pal Strongheart the Paladin travelling with his Halfling thief buddy Figgin to the “Festival of the Halflings of the Plains of the Long Horned Sheep.” That is a direct quote. ¶ The pair ask a woodsman for directions. The woodsman, rightly identifying Figgin as a thief, wants nothing to do with them. Figgin, confirming the woodsman’s suspicions, steals the man’s map. They are then held up by a locked gate, which the Halfling picks. ¶ The pair then comes across the dragon and Figgin attempts to net it. When that doesn’t work (stupid Halfling), Strongheart beats it in the head with the flat of his blade until it slinks off. The pair then make it to the festival. The third Dungeons & Dragons book and record from Kid Stuff is Attack of the Assassins, which seems a little intense for a kid’s book. ¶ Kelek wants Strongheart murdered, so he calls Zarak, the half-orc assassin. Kelek explains amidst several insults (one of a vaguely racist nature) that he has forged a note from Mercion the cleric requesting Strongheart meet her at midnight and the pair resolve to kidnap Mercion for some reason, then send the note. Which they do. But Strongheart and Ringlerun suspect the note is a forgery, so the wizard lends the paladin his ring of invisibility. ¶ Strongheart goes to the meeting and gets his butt kicked even with the ring of invisibility, but is saved at the last minute when the silence spells cast on Mercion wear off. The second Kid Stuff book and recording for Dungeons & Dragons is Quest of the Riddles. ¶ Ringlerun the wizard is ill. The characters talk about this as if it isn’t a big deal, but then Ringlerun asks Strongheart (while strongly implying that the paladin is his son) to go on a quest to find a potion of longevity, so it sounds to me like Ringlerun is dying, but hey, what do I know? ¶ Once at the castle that holds the potion, Strongheart is confronted by a riddle, which is more of a statement. I’d reproduce it here, but I don’t have enough characters. Just trust me on this. The second one is a genuine riddle and it leads Strongheart into combat with a badass skeleton warrior. ¶ The final riddle finds the potion locked in one of three chests, the other two containing a deadly poison gas. The clue for the riddle is literally a transcripts of a three card monte game: “The chest you seek was in the middle. Now follow if you can the riddle. Right moved left and left moved right, then new left to the middle did alight. Is the chest right, left or middle?
