.................................. AN ENCHANTING BINDING BY LÉON MAILLARD OF THE CLUB BINDERY ON MOSHER’S EDITION OF ROSSETTI’S POEMS PRINTED ON VELLUM Rossetti, Dante Gabriel. POEMS (Mosher, 1902). Copy No. 2 of 4 printed on Roman vellum, signed by the publisher; from the Quarto Series. Bound at the Club Bindery 1905, and further signed by Léon Maillard, Finisher. A superb light brown levant morocco binding with wide gilt pointellé borders on the covers as a dense background to an array of horse-chestnut leaves and nuts; plain center panels each surmounted by a dragonfly. Spine with prominent bands, highly ornate panels carrying through the design and pointellé work of the covers, but adding two ladybugs at head and tail panels. All borders inlaid with bands of what was called “old blue.” Plain leather doublures of same color as covers. All page edges gilt. The Henry William Poor copy with his oval leather bookplate (plus later nameplate). Entry No. 115 exhibited as part of The Grolier Club’s AN EXHIBITION OF SOME OF THE LATEST ARTISTIC BINDINGS DONE AT THE CLUB BINDERY (NY, April 26-May 12, 1906). BALLADS DONE INTO ENGLISH FROM THE FRENCH OF FRANCOIS VILLON (Mosher, 1904) bound by Alan Winstanley of Salisbury Bookbinders in 1973. Alan Winstanley studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts at Holborn, then studied bookbinding and creative art at Luton and St. Albans. He worked for Sydney Cockerell in Letchworth before moving to Salisbury in 1959 at the invitation of Harry Bailey to take on his craft bookbinding business. Salisbury Bookbinders flourished for forty-one years until Winstanley’s retirement in 2000. His work was commissioned for wedding presents to Prince Charles and the late Princess of Wales, and he executed the prestigious job of creating and binding the donor record volume for Lord Mountbatten’s memorial at Broadlands. Bookplate of Cynthia Graham (née Duncombe) one of the daughters of the 1st Earl of Feversham and wife of Sir Richard James Graham, 4th Bart. Alas, the years of light shining on the binding was not kind to its original green color, but sometimes one can only accept what one finds in order to preserve the historical artifact. Indeed, it is still a complicated and striking example. Two pictures of Lady Graham are at the end of the photos.
