What is it about backbends that draws you to them... or away from them? How do you feel when you’re in a backbend, and how often do you practice them in a week vs other asanas? Im genuinely curious, and there is no wrong answer

For me, backbends are a way to feel more open emotionally. I used to be a verrryyy closed off person, not really believing or trusting in others due to all the things I’ve experienced. But once I found yoga and introduced safe backbends and breath work into my life, I felt that emotional wall kinda drop! Sounds cheesy but backbends really did open up my heart ❤️

Bow pose is such a wonderful back body strengthener, and front body opener. This pose in combination with Wheel pose will take you far in your backbends practice if you include them often. Even though they are super similar, they have different benefits based on how they work with gravity and weight. Some people find Bow harder, and some Wheel. Happy Friday! ☀️ Day 8 of #propasanas2 is Bow Pose with a strap. This is one of my favorite backbends! I’m showing you how to practice half bow with a strap, how to lift both legs and the full version. (Video sped up a bit) -
Make sure you’re warmed up before, especially in the spine, chest and shoulders.
To prepare, practice half bow first, using a strap to strengthen the extensors, or back side body. When you’re ready to practice lifting both legs, make two loops at the end of the strap. Loop around each foot or ankle depending on your preference. Grab a hold of the strap with both hands, bringing the elbows above the head. Wall your hands down the strap so they are as close to your feet as possible. Keeping the feet flexed here might be helpful!
If you’re practicing without straps play around with holding the feet on the outside AND inside (it’s an amazing stretch for your chest.) Flip your grip: holding onto the foot from the outside, bring your shoulders forward and practice rotating your shoulders (this requires a bit of flexibility in the ankles as well.)
A few tips when you’re in bow pose: make sure your knees are hip-width apart. As you lift the heels and thighs higher, press your shoulder blades firmly against your back to open your heart. Really press your feet into your hands to lift the legs even higher. Keep your gaze looking forward, if it’s comfortable for your neck you can drop the head back slightly. Remember sthira and sukha or steadiness and ease. Challenge yourself but don’t strain.
