Orca Psychology: Cognitive, Emotional, and Social Behavior, Self-awareness, and Emotions (Part 4) - Psychological, behavioral, and ecological characteristics determine how well any species adapts to artificial settings, which is why it’s important to consider the psychological qualities of orcas, including self-awareness, emotions, social complexity, and culture. Self-awareness is the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. Orcas have demonstrated several abilities indicative of self-awareness, including imitation, which requires an understanding of the relation between one’s own body and another’s. Another ability is mirror self-recognition - the ability to use a mirror to investigate one’s own body. In a study of their responses to mirrors, orcas show contingency checking behavior - a correlate of self-directed responses exhibited by most individuals who demonstrate mirror self-recognition. - Orcas experience deep emotions and strong social attachments similar to humans. Observations of orcas include reports of long-range contact calling when separated from others, grieving behaviors, and helping (epimeletic) behaviors. In addition to helping or assisting individuals in distress, epimeletic behavior often involves adult individuals attending to a deceased individual by keeping them afloat, lifting, or pushing the individual. These types of behaviors have been characterized by scientists as expressions of bereavement or concern about the breaking of strong social bonds. The longest and best documented example of this bereavement behavior a free-ranging orca was from July through August 2018 in the Salish Sea off of Washington State. A 20-year-old orca known as J35 “Tahlequah” gave birth to a female calf who died within thirty minutes. The calf was carried on J35’s back, rostrum, and in her mouth for 17 days (slide 2).
