My name is Allyn Rose and this is my #SelfExamGram. Four years ago this past March I underwent a prophylactic double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer. I made this decision because of a strong family history of the disease (my mother, grandmother and great aunt). After surgery, I thought I was “out of the woods...” but just two months after my first surgery, I experienced a complication due to the placement of my tissue expander and had to have the left removed and replaced. I remember the fear on my father’s face as they wheeled me back, once again, into surgery. It was almost as if he was watching, helplessly, the same way he had done with my mother... surgery after surgery, battling cancer. I promised him that I was going to be okay, and reminded him that I had the luxury of not being sick, the luxury of choosing this on my own and the luxury of taking charge of my life and my health. I could not be more grateful that I have the opportunity to live a life without the fear of breast cancer. It's #transformationtuesday! ❣️ The pic on the left I’d just finished my final round of chemo one month prior to my celebratory vacay. I felt like I had #breastcancer stamped on my forehead. I was nervous about my bald head, self conscious about how my non-reconstructed breasts would look in a swimsuit, scared about the stares I would get from the scars left behind on my body, and worried about what I would do with my life now that I had a 2nd chance. ❣️ One thing I know for sure is that, time heals all wounds! My breasts? They are not perfect. They ripple, I have scars, I have dents, and I even have discoloration from skin dying throughout my surgeries, but every moment on this earth makes it worth it. A year ago today? I had one breast and left an agency crying because they told me I was no longer sexy to men and would never shoot swimwear... Not even a year later I was published in Vanity Fair four times and Glamour once... ALL in a swimsuit. I guess my point is, if you don’t want to continue with reconstruction? Don’t. If you do? Do it. But stop doing things because you want to appear “normal”.

HOSPITAL. GAMMY STYLE .... Strange day ‍♀️ lazy morning with the kids and making pancakes, before we dropped them at the local school fete. With friends helping out with childcare, we headed to ‘the’ hospital for my heart echo // When we got to the fete I got really emotional and started crying .... a year ago we were there. It was a stonking hot day; I was helping out with the PTA BBQ; our friends were running the music and we enjoyed a few g&t’s and were starting the countdown to our wedding, only 6 weeks away.... blissfully unaware of what was round the corner for us. The contrast of today really hit me hard. I think this will become more and more prevalent for me over the coming months as last years wedding memories are sorely contrasted with now // Today we actually (and NO exaggeration) got seen on time for the first time EVER at The Lister for my heart echo.
