After flying from Newcastle to Biarritz in France via Paris I have gratefully arrived at my hostel. My transfer at Paris airport was a heart in the mouth experience as I knew I didn’t have much time to make the transfer in an airport the size of a planet. I think (think being the key word) I’ve booked a taxi for the early morning to get me to Bayonne train station after a long and drawn out conversation in scattered English/ French (maybe threw some accidental Spanish in there as well) with a French man who I thought worked in the hostel. I realise now that he absolutely doesn’t. He’s actually sleeping in my dorm. But thankfully to him speaking to a taxi company over the phone I will hopefully get to the station and in turn get the train to St Jean Pied de Port where my real journey can begin. Triacastela- Sarria 20k- Porto Marin 22k - Palas de Rei 25k - Ribadiso 26k It’s only 2 days left till we hit Santiago. To say I’m conflicted about arriving at our final destination is an understatement. Mostly I just don’t want to get there- but then there are moments, like today, when I’m sprawled on the side of the road, gathering the energy to walk up yet another hill, when I realise that I’m so completely done. To get your official Compostela certificate you only have to walk 100km from Sarria (5 days) - so this means that crowds of lycra, selfie sticks and enthusiasm have been piling off buses and into our laps. These newcomers are reserving the last beds at our hostels and are at the front of our coffee queues. This lot aren’t like us: they’re hikers. They do stretches. They’re here for a nice holiday. They seem organised and together and quite lovely really. Which is obviously fine- we’re just different to them. Instead, we’re collapsing into towns with the same audacity that one might have on the last day of a festival. All social etiquette is out the window for us; picking feet at the dinner table has become a normalised, shameless activity. We’re filthy. But we’re not sorry. A man laughed at us for eating our (pre-made) sandwiches on the side of the road yesterday, but we couldn’t even muster the strength to reply ‘what exactly is so funny?’ I’ve felt reminded that, after 5 weeks of walking, I’m still not really allowed to say that I’m a proper hiker. But what I am allowed to say, is that I’m a proper pilgrim. St Jean Pied du Port - Roncesvalles (27km)- Larrasoana (32km)- Pamplona (17km) The first day was a total beast. But I did it! I got to Bayonne train station for the first train to St Jean Pied de Port which was at 7:42am for 10 euros. Naomi was a lighthouse. I spotted her guidebook and rucksack before I’d barely even entered the station and I felt myself physically stop tensing when I heard her Burnley accent. She’s a northerner- like me. I can’t tell you how relieving this was. I’m obviously here to meet all sorts of people- I could make friends with a goat. But I think us northerners do have a tribal instinct that draws us together. When I needed someone the most in a foreign place I didn’t know- it was a northern lass that talked to me about how she was a nurse taking a year out and about how she wanted a brew- that saved me. She’s also a three fags before breakfast kind of girl, which makes me like her even more. We get to St Jean on the train which takes about an hour and find the pilgrim’s office. In order to stay in hostels along the Camino you need a pilgrim’s passport which gets stamped in each place- only 2 euros. We also speak to lovely people at the office that do things like give us maps and tell us about the first day ahead of us which makes me feel even more relieved. I knew that I’d got to where I needed to be and I could start now. The walk on the first day from St Jean to Roncesvalles (via the Napoleon route) is notoriously the most difficult day of the whole Camino. Not only is it 27 km but it’s up hill through the Pyrenees in baking heat and then a steep descent down. It took us about 7 hours. You follow the shells to follow the way, or the red and white stripes as we soon found out. We were met at an opening to the town by a Camino volunteer to tell us we’d made it. I was so delirious with hunger that I think I swore at him (well not at him but it was still unnecessary). Trying to get a closer look at Hjørungfjorden! Jakta (1588) and Risenosa (1563) today After racing with 1,5hrs sleep in the bank and 6hrs drive starting at 04 am yesterday (not a recommended approach to racing), my body was in a little protest today. I kept finding myself more interested in bluebeeries than holding a steady pace. In the end I stopped fighting it and thought that both recovery and antioxidants are good for the body So I kept a comfy pace that allowed me to take in loads of berries (and grass, yes I ate that too; no time to sort). I spent the entire day out and probably did a couple VKs in total. Now I feel so content and sedated.
