Government shutdown meant the normal release time of camp sites for brooks was put on hold for a month until yesterday. Some of the days I was looking for sold out in five minutes but I was able to lock up a campsite for a few days after a @bassproshops @cabelas SOA fishing trip for kings. These bears are also habituated to being unusually close to humans in guided groups, making images like this possible from places like the public-access viewing platform at Brooks Camp. These bears’ habitat, and their uniquely harmonious relationships with humans, are currently threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine, a massive open-pit copper and gold mine that would fragment their habitat, create human-bear conflict, and create 10 billion tons of toxic wastewater that if mismanaged could poison the headwaters of the world’s most prolific salmon rivers. Katmai National Park (Brooks Falls) was one of the most incredible places that I have visited. It is also one of the most challenging for photographers.. I hope to go back again.
