Did you hear the recent discussion on sunscreen safety . ▶️ On the news: 4 of commonly used active sunscreen ingredients were studied in an exploratory maximal usage trial (all over the body 4 times a day for 4 days). The ingredients were absorbed through the skin and detected in the blood at a level higher than the FDA’s guideline threshold. . ▶️ What were the tested ingredients? Avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule . ▶️ What does this mean? It does not mean sunscreen is unsafe. This finding calls for further testing to determine the safety of the ingredient for repeated use. . ▶️ What should I do for protection? 1️⃣ Consider zinc or titanium-based sunscreen, which is used in sunscreens for baby/kid. The particles of these ingredients are larger than the tested sunscreen ingredients, making absorption through the skin less likely. . 2️⃣ Wear UV apparel, long-sleeved shirts/pant, and hats . 3️⃣ Seek shades and stay out of the sun when the sun is the strongest (usually between 11am-3pm) . I’d like to remind you that applying sunscreen and other sun protective measures reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. And too much sun without protection also makes your wrinkles, skin texture change, and discoloration worse. . Retinoid creams are prescription. Azelaic acid: I use a prescription called Finacea, which is 15% Azelaic acid. I like Azelaic acid because it works well for acne too (blackheads and white heads) but also helps for pigmentation. I use it to fade the red spots the acne pimples leave on the skin. I went to see @dr.jenniferherrmann today for a piqo4 laser treatment today. She’s been very patiently treating my melasma (brown spots) for a while now. My skin is super sensitive so she has to use a low setting for me. I’ve seen MAJOR improvements - the melasma on the left side of my face is practically nonexistent!
