Not posting this for attention because I’m not like that. I’m posting this to show you how real, how painful living with mental illnesses is. I’ve honestly had a week from hell, I’ve had all my rights taken away from me, been too unwell to make simple choices for myself but I’m getting help and that’s all that matters. I miss everyone. I wish my brain would just stop being so cruel to me, all I want is happiness but it seems too far away to bother trying for it anymore. All I can do is just keep advocating for mental health, show people what it’s really like living with these demons in our heads. A lot of people would be far to scared to share something like this but I’m not ashamed anymore. This is my life and I’ve accepted that, I don’t need to hide from anyone or anything. If you don’t accept my illness then you don’t accept me. I’m hurting so so much, I feel like all hope is lost, I just am sick of everything. 3 years ago this week he came home with me. Never in my life have I made a decision to take an animal home in less than 5 minutes but he looked at me and I knew. We connected. He was starved, weak, and miserable. He had chronic demodex, deep pyoderma, a heart murmur, and a broken canine tooth that was still attached and flopping around in his mouth. The skin on his head was lichenified, meaning a fungus had started to grow, making it brittle and cracked. He couldn’t even stand on his own. He smelled. Really bad. And he was bleeding from wounds all over. (He would later share with me a staff infection. One of my least favorite gifts of all time.) It was my job to evaluate his case for prosecution potential, but there wasn’t enough information on him to make a cruelty case. We’ll never know the events that led to a good Sam finding him in the street but I can only hope it’s not something he remembers. I had no intention of adopting a dog that day but he needed help and for the first time in my career working in animal shelters, I took my work home with me. His recovery was nothing short of a miracle- he had to have fluids, 4 feedings a day, daily medicated baths and topical treatments, multiple antibiotics, and 3 surgeries. The years that have followed have been 100% worth it. We’ve traveled together, hiked until we collapsed, shared ice cream in the summer, swam in the ocean, and spent many nights cuddled up on the couch watching movies. He has a bestie now, Georgia, and is the absolute best dog I could have asked for. He looks at me like he couldn’t live without me, and the feeling is mutual.
