Repost of LinkedIn post by Smit Salvage. At the end of April 2019, the bulk carrier ULTRA TRUST, loaded with 59.600 mton of coal, ran aground off Indonesia. A special ‘co-salvors’ team from SMIT Salvage, Nippon Salvage and Samudera Salvage was arranged. Besides the mobilisation of personnel, a large AHT was loaded with salvage equipment from SMIT’s warehouse in Singapore in order to be fully self-sufficient at the remote location. The shore team in Indonesia was preparing logistics and approvals from the authorities. The salvage team found the vessel hard aground, but without serious damage or leakage. It was decided to make a refloating attempt, but this turned out to be unsuccessful. The next step was to lighter part of the cargo in order to reduce the ground reaction, this under the supervision and calculations of the Naval Architect on site. The team had already been preparing various logistical services and resources. A few days later, two large cargo barges with tugs and stevedores were moored alongside. With the vessel’s own cranes, about 7.000 mton cargo was lightered. By de-ballasting, the vessel was refloated early May. The term "Newcastlemax" is used to define a cargo ship with the maximal size allowed to operate in the Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. The Port of Newcastle is the largest coal exporting Harbor in the world. Newcastle max ships are a subgenre of "capesize" ships. That term is used for ships too large to operate in the Suez Canal-thus also too large for the Panama Canal. When such ships travel between oceans, they need to pass the Cape of Good Hope or the Cape Horn. This newcastlemax dry bulk cargo carrier is the Hille Oldendorff. She was built in 2016 by CATIC in China for the North German shipping company Oldendorff ( @oldendorff1921 ). The original ship has a beam of 50 meters and is 299 meters long. She can carry 224.000 cubic meters of dry cargo and sails under the flag of Portugal. This impressively detailed waterline miniature was created by the CSC company in a scale of 1:1250. It is displayed on deck 9 of the museum.
