CR Stecyk III: Why do you surf? What are you trying to get out of it?
Bunker Spreckles: "Good health and pleasure. Something beautiful to look at, something beautiful to think about in a society that's pretty rat-fucked. Something that you can still do that's just beautiful, aesthetic." @itsalrightwerealright (love the feed) @lassendavis @lil_dancing #nosurfing #surfing #bunkerspreckels #crstecyk
Bunker Spreckels and Tony Alva with Spyder Wills, Hollywood 1976
Spreckels, the stepson of Clark Gable, was a privileged LA party boy and heir to a multi million dollar fortune. Gable schooled him in the art of hunting and revealed the illusory insanity of the Hollywood image factory to his young charge. Bunker grew up in Hawaii receiving tuition from the Old Kahunas in fishing, canoeing and surf riding
At 18 he turned his back on the family fortune, returning to the North Shore he survived by building surfboards and pioneered a revolutionary approach to board design, crafting radically short, hard edged boards earning the admiration of Miki Dora among others
He was also passionate about martial arts, guns and women, which would ultimately result in him slipping into a jet set life of drugs, sex and wild road trips. So remarkable was his lifestyle that he created an alter ego who invited photographers and filmmakers to trail him, putting together a tell all epic that was to be titled ‘The Player’. Before the project could be completed Spreckels died at the age of 27 in Hawaii.

[ I would like to share this lovely interview by Bunker Spreckels about his stepfather, Clark Gable ]
.
Bunker Spreckels
( August 15, 1949 - January 7, 1977 )
.
Born Adolph Bernard Spreckels III — great grandson of a Germany-born sugar baron, railway tycoon and publisher, Claus Spreckels — grew up in the lap of luxury.
.
When he was five, the world's most famous man became his stepfather. Clark Gable schooled him in the art of hunting and revealed the illusory insanity of the image factory to his young charge.
.
Bunker was an American surfer and an early pioneer of a surfboard design which some people believe eventually led to the creation of the fish style of board.
.
✔ What was it like growing up around Clark Gable?
.
He couldn't go out on the streets without causing a riot. I don't think there's anybody that's come around today as far as just out-and-out being a superstar that's more famous than Clark Gable was, and still is. I'm not talking about rich, I'm just talking about fame.
.
I got to know him on a level that people wouldn't ever normally get to know him. I'll say one thing - he was the same way at home that he was on the screen. He didn't change very much. He was from that no-crap school of acting and that's the way he lived, too. He was never one to talk about himself. He'd always talk about other people or other things rather than himself. If you listen to people most of the time nowadays they're usually talking about themselves.
.
✔ What did you learn from him?
.
I learned a lot about grooming. I heard from him what a fuck-tit the acting business is. I learned a lot about words, how to use words. He taught me how to use the dictionary.
.
✔ Did you learn anything else from him?
.
He taught me how to shoot. He taught me how to use different weapons - knives and bullwhips, that type of thing. He was good with a whip. He was good with a lasso, good in the cowboy arts. Good with horses. He was good with animals. He was into hunting and fishing.

Today would have been the 69th birthday of renegade American surfer Bunker Spreckels, the type of guy who proudly tripled down on denim with a classic @LeeJeans trucker jacket, denim vest, and jeans.
Born Adolph Bernard Spreckels III on August 15, 1949, the surf pioneer became a stepson to Clark Gable when his mother Kay became the actor's fifth wife in 1955. After a decade of excessive living and innovative surfing, Bunker died in Hawaii during the first week of 1977.
