The Volcanic Tableland in California offers exceptional bouldering opportunities because of it's unique geologic features. This area is culturally significant to Native Americans, who occupied the area prior to Euro-American contact and continue to use the area today. The physical remnants of their activities are scattered throughout the Owens Valley region and on the the Volcanic Tableland. Please respect these irreplaceable resources by leaving them the way you find them. The Volcanic Tableland is co-cooperatively managed by the BLM and the Bishop Paiute Tribe through a formal memorandum of agreement. Learn more about the area and it's importance to Native American culture by stopping by the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center in Bishop, California, before exploring the Volcanic Tableland. In the early 90s, this area was a hidden gem and a favorite of local climbers. By the late 90s, thousands of climbers from all over the world began to visit the area to try out their climbing skills on the many boulder problems of the "Happy" and "Sad" bouldering areas. In response to this dramatic increase in use, the BLM and the local climbing community developed a climbing management strategy focused on protecting the natural resources and cultural values of the Volcanic Tableland, while maintaining access to climbing opportunities. These joint management efforts continue through frequent tribal consultations and site-specific project implementation. The local conservation non-profit Friends of the Inyo and the BLM lead interpretive outings to explore the long cultural history of the Volcanic Tableland. Explore and protect #yourlands with us. Tonight, our International Dark Sky Week star-gazing adventure takes us to California with this stunning shot near Corn Springs Campground, located deep in a canyon of the Chuckwalla Mountains. Situated adjacent to a stand of California fan palms, this oasis supports abundant wildlife and is an important stopping place for migratory birds. Petroglyphs at Corn Springs are one of the finest examples of rock art in the Colorado Desert. They display a wide variety of elements and cover a long time span, with the earliest petroglyphs dating as far back as 10,000 years. In addition to being a route for Native American Indians moving east and west, Corn Springs was used by the Chemehuevi Indians who moved into California about 1,100 A.D. These Native American Indians lived in harmony with the desert ecosystem, utilizing many of the native plants. In 1969, the BLM dedicated nearly 30,000 acres of public land west of Lone Pine, California, as the Alabama Hills Recreation Area. A short drive from the Hollywood center of filmmaking, the Alabama Hills have attracted movie makers from all over the world. Since the early 1920’s, movie stars such as Tom Mix, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry and the Lone Ranger have been shooting it out with outlaws. Classics such as Gunga Din, Yellow Sky, and How the West was Won were filmed at sites now known as “Movie Flats”. The 1990 sci-fi classic Tremors was filmed almost entirely on location in the Alabama Hills. Some movies filmed here more recently include Star Trek Generations, Gladiator, Iron Man and Django Unchained.
