Colorful costumes and fast camels.. . The Camel Festival on March 6 - 7 in Mongolia's South Gobi province has become a local tradition that is attracting ever more spectators. . Its a great show and celebration of the culture of the nomadic herders in the Gobi for whom the camel is an important animal in daily and seasonal life in the desert - for transport, and for wool and dairy products. . And of course for racing. The camel race during the festival is one exciting event, along with parades to show traditional costumes and camels decorated in colorful ornaments. . There are also cultural performances, other competitions in skills of camel handling and packing, and exhibits of the many dairy products made from camel milk. . Between events, and in preparation of the race, there is a lot of milling around, and camel wrangling, to keep a thousand camels in line at the start, while countless local visitors on camelback are riding around the larger event area. . Its a great event to witness, and a trip to the camel festival is an opportunity to visit some of the iconic sites of the Mongolian Gobi. Here he is in all of his glory! Mr Joey Bear! Now for the knitters out there I made this little guy using 4ply Baby Camel wool from deep within my stash. His jumper and socks are Jamieson and Smith 2ply jumper weight. His eyes were bought on trademe from Pixie Stitchin’, and he is stuffed with all natural wool roving and a bit of makers magic Pattern is Myrtil Bear by @fromcinthia - I’m not entirely sure that I executed his head correctly but honestly ‍♀️ he’s perfect. Baby camels in the Mongolian Gobi. . These fluffy fellows are as cute as any animal baby. We met them this year in May when traveling in the remote desert landscapes in Southern Mongolia, enroute to a site with ancient petroglyphs. . We came across a camel herders family busy shearing their camels. It was already quite hot, which makes the work of cutting the wool from these big Bactrian camels even harder. . But we were welcomed to watch the proceedings, and take photographs. A great opportunity to learn about the life of the Nomadic herders of the Gobi. . The little vest is done; made of wool from steppeland camels. There is no shearing or combing involved, for the wool is shed by camels in the late spring, when it has done its winter work. It falls to the ground, and herding families pick up the clumps and stash them away for spinning. This vest is made of yarn spun from this fiber, and its soft warmness will keep him toasty even when cold winds blow. It was spun from the cloud, having been handpicked from the clumps in which it fell from the first owner.
